Went to the kideo's concert tonight and was asked to not forget the camera so I was sure not to!
Sat down in a isle seat were I could get a descent shot and set the flash at full zoom and full power, cam at iso400, 160th second took test shot and was ready

The Conductor tells everyone there is a company making a DVD for sale and they get copyright to video therefore no videography or audio recording allowed and once the concert starts no FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY allowed.

Ok darn, but I understand not flashing the performance, who wants flashing in the video and those kids don't wanna be blinded either.

So I go to iso 1600 and F 2.8 , remove flash from camera.
Get told by some camera police that I cant shoot DIDNT YOU HEAR THE RULES

Yes I did clearly stated no Flash and I removed it. Then told NO YOU CANT SHOOT AT ALL READ THE PROGRAM IT SAYS NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED, so I put it away and could not read the program in the dark

Lots of point and shoots all night without what I got, she did jump on every video device and ONE still shooter (that I am aware of) though.

Just read every word of program and not a single word about photography in it.

Power corrupts and so does you right to photograph your child in a PUBLIC space paid for by your taxes.
Many schools now do that..as they want to make BIG $$$$$$ from selling a cheesy DVD.
Complain to the PTA. Might not make any difference, but at least they know YOU care!!

Sorry Dead Eye..:huggy:

Yea I get it selling the copyright and all. But why did the conductor clearly say no FLASH why not say NO PHOTOGRAPHY
I do not believe they bought the photography rights as well but could be wrong, and why the lie about the program?

In the End 99.9% of people can't shoot low light without flash - so why would they buy the photography rights when very few people could manage a half decent shot without flash.

End Rant:drummer:

If a company is making and selling a DVD of the concert, wouldn't they be required to get a signed release from everyone that's performing?

Merlin, No they would not need a release to sell to the school parents. A release is needed only if it is used for advertising. Most schools now have parents sign a form at the beginning of the year to allow the kids to be photographed for the year book filler photos. It also allows parents to say no to having there kids photos taken and published in the year book. Is not needed but give parents an option to not have their kids photos public.

As for them not allowing photos at the concert. It was possibly stated in the companies contract with the school, that the company would be the only ones able to take photos of certain events. I haven't heard of this for many school events. Usually it only obtains to event photography that has close up access and geared to keep other professionals from competing with the contracted photographer. For example, a photographer friend pays $150 plus a percentage of sells, per tournement, to be the event photographer for hockey tournaments in the DC area. Usually it is no problem for parents to be shooting from their seats in the crowd though. Sounds like someone just getting carried away.

Yea she did not trouble those with little point and shoots who turned off the flash. She was immediately on any video camera and probably thought the old 1D I was shooting with could do HD video witch it can't.
