Life OUT of Southern Maryland

Hub & kids always want to go to the same place every year for vacation. I really would like something different. Problem: they love the beach/water - I don't. However, I do like being outdoors. Ideas, PLEASE!!!

Go camping at the beach. You will be outdoors and they can go to the beach. We go to Pirate Land in S.C. every year. It is a blast.

Deep Creek Lake. They can fish and swim or whatever it is people do in the water, and you can sit on the deck and enjoy life.

Where do you usually go?

:yay: Rocky Gap State Park has really nice camping and a nice beach built on one side of the lake....if you want to go a little further away try Lake Lure NC is really nice...they have a lot of good websites and The hicking at nearby chimney rock is great

You can check out the Toe River Lodge. Nice little B&B not far from Chimney Rock in Plumtree. If anyone likes to fish, there are huge catfish in Lake Lure.

Very nice choice, but he said the wife and kids are into the beach so a big lake doesn't satisfy us beach people.

The hicking isn't bad right here, either - just head out to the 7th District. :lmao: I don't hick very often though - they don't like people staring at them.

If you want to head down to Florida, there are tons of natural springs found in North and Central Florida to swim in and to explore the natural surroundings of them. My three favorites are Ichetucknee Springs near Gainesville, Wakulla Springs near Tallahassee, and De Leon Springs in Deland near Daytona. Others well worth checking out are Blue Springs, Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs, Silver Glen Springs, Salt Springs, Ginnie Springs, Poe Springs, and many others. The water is a little cool but during the summer very refreshing. Most have nature trails for good hiking and wildlife sighting (Blue Springs even has manatees).

Ichetucknee Springs has a great run where you can rent an inner tube and float down the river--just make sure to get there early. Wakulla Springs has scenic boat rides, a cool diving platform at the edge of the spring, and an old hotel with a nice restaraunt and lobby next door to the spring (but keep in mind it isn't your normal modern day Holiday Inn). De Leon Springs has a pancake restaraunt next to the spring where they will bring out pancake batter for you and you can cook all the pancakes you can eat on a grill in the middle of your table. It also has a place where you can rent out paddle boats and canoes and explore the lake adjacent to the spring.

Plus, being Florida, you're never too far from the beach. Check out the stretch of beach between Jacksonville and Daytona; they aren't quite as congested or developed as the beaches further south in terms of condos and other sprawl. There are several state parks with beaches that are totally natural (Anastasia State Park, Matansas Inlet, Guano River State Park).

Thank you all for your great ideas. I'm going to check them all out. (The place I usually go to is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It's nice, but not for the umteenth time, ya' know?)

Same thought here, Deep Creek is one of those places that has something for everyone, all four seasons.
