Chicago mayor bans unaccompanied minors from visiting public park during certain hours after fatal shooting

Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is banning unaccompanied minors from visiting Chicago's Millennium Park after a 16-year-old boy was shot to death near "The Bean" sculpture on Saturday.

The boy, identified by police as Seandell Holliday, was shot in Millennium Park around 7:30 p.m. Police said that they have two suspects in custody, but didn't release their identities or name a possible motive for the shooting.

"Earlier this evening, a 16-year-old was tragically killed near Millennium Park. This senseless loss of life is utterly unacceptable," Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement Saturday evening. "Tonight, a mother is grief-stricken, mourning the loss of her child and searching for answers. My heart is breaking for the mother as she grieves this unspeakable loss."

Lori Lightfoot's book banning tweet lampooned amid rising crime, alleged Dem hypocrisy

Many Twitter users excoriated Lightfoot for the tweet, with some urging her to tend to Chicago's skyrocketing crime rate instead of tweeting about books. Others pointed out that "To Kill a Mockingbird" was banned in California, a blue state.

"According to Barack Obama, in Chicago it's easier for a kid to get a gun than a book," wrote Daily Wire investigative reporter Luke Rosiak.

"Yep, Red states rock," wrote Dr. Nan Hayworth, a former Republican congresswoman from New York. "Good to see Chicago's mayor celebrating this. Let's see if she takes home any lessons."

Chicago must like their crime because they keep voting for it. And that's fine because criminals flock to places where they can ply their trade and avoid cities that won't tolerate it, which means we who live in those intolerant cities are pretty safe.

Lightfoot stated, “We were part of an amicus effort on the behalf of a number of states in support of the New York law and really focusing on the importance of federalism. But unfortunately, given the composition of this court, we were not surprised that they struck down the New York law. But I think that they gave ample opportunity for New York and other states to pass other laws…commonsense restrictions on gun use, and particularly people displaying weapons in public, which is itself a threat. And I think Mayor Adams is absolutely right, it is going to make it more challenging for police officers all across New York State to be able to do their job. It doesn’t have any immediate consequences for us here in Chicago, and it’s interesting that it’s coming, obviously, on the heels of the bipartisan effort in the Senate.”

She added, “The fact that the court is coming down with this decision feels tone-deaf and I worry that it undermines the legitimacy of the court, particularly given the leaked draft of the Roe decision.”

the law isn't supposed to have feelings therefore the law cannot be tone deaf

I do not think Lightfoot Understands Federalism

Leo Terrell slams Lori Lightfoot for ‘F Clarence Thomas’ remark: 'She sent a coded message'

Lightfoot, Democrats berated Thomas, conservative judges following Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade

Civil Rights attorney Leo Terrell joined "Fox & Friends" Tuesday to weigh in on the response to the Supreme Court ruling from Democrats across the country. Terrell harshly criticized Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot's "F--- Clarence Thomas" remark at a pride event in Chicago over the weekend calling it "a distraction" from Chicago's raging crime.

Not sure why she's so worried about abortion. That face has to be the best birth control ever.

Lightfoot, Who Yelled ‘F*** Clarence Thomas,’ Complains About ‘Toxicity In Our Public Discourse’

“What feels like is happening this moment in our democracy is people are losing respect for the institutions of our democracy,” Lightfoot, who targeted Thomas after his concurrence in the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, declared hypocritically.

“You’ve heard the superintendent talk over and over again about the number of law officers in full uniform, in their squad cars, that are being shot at. That says to me that the people who are acting so brazenly have not only no respect for themselves but they don’t have any respect for the institution like the police department, who, men and women, every single day, on every watch, are literally risking life and limb for our safety,” Lightfoot continued.

Then she pronounced, “The toxicity in our public discourse is a thing that I think we should all be concerned about, right? And it’s ironic, obviously, that we’re having this conversation of what happened on Independence Day. You know, we’re not like a lot of other countries were independence — their version of Independence Day is marked with, you know, troops and tanks and — no, what we do in the United States is we come together as a community.”

Chicago Mayor Lightfoot tells McDonald's CEO to 'educate himself' after he warns of rising crime

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired back at the CEO of McDonald’s after he highlighted the difficulty rising crime in the city has caused for his business, telling him he needs to "educate himself" on the matter.

"I think what would have been helpful is for the McDonald's CEO to educate himself before he spoke," the Chicago Democrat said during a media availability on Tuesday.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski warned in a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago luncheon last week that it was time to "face facts" and acknowledge that companies have been leaving the city over the past year due in part to rising crime.

"The fact is that there are fewer large companies headquartered in Chicago this year than last year," Kempczinski said. "There are fewer this month than last month."

Tyson Foods moves corporate jobs to Arkansas in latest blow to Chicago

The biggest U.S. meat company by sales said on Wednesday it will relocate all corporate employees from offices in Chicago and suburban Downers Grove, along with those in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, to its headquarters in Springdale, Arkansas.

It is the latest shakeup for Tyson, which has about 1,000 corporate employees in the Chicago-area and South Dakota offices. Overall the meat company has about 120,000 U.S. employees, with about 114,000 of those working in production plants.

Tyson will begin a "phased relocation" of the corporate employees early next year, according to a statement. It said the move will "foster closer collaboration, enhance team member agility and enable faster decision making."

Members of the Tyson family, which founded Tyson Foods, and several top executives have long been based in Arkansas.

Lightfoot blocks Chicago City Council from considering referendum on doubling real estate tax

CHICAGO - Mayor Lori Lightfoot is preventing the Chicago City Council from considering a potential referendum question that residents would vote on in February, asking whether the city should double its tax on property sales where the price tag is over $1 million.

"Despite this mayor being one of the weakest mayors in decades, she still has a lot of power. And right now she's using that power to block her campaign promises," said. Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa.

There was more parliamentary maneuvering, but in the end, since a majority of the city council was not present, no substantive action could be taken.

Lori plays the race card: Chicago mayor Lightfoot urges black voters to help her 'keep the seat' from falling to white or Hispanic challengers, despite crime spike - as local business leaders plot to oust her

  • Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot is in a tight race with Paul Vallas and Chuy Garcia
  • Lightfoot made history as first black gay woman to serve as Chicago mayor
  • But her bid for a second term is in question amid concerns over high crime rates

'Any vote coming from the South Side for somebody not named Lightfoot is a vote for Chuy Garcia or Paul Vallas,' Lightfoot said. 'If you want them controlling your destiny, then stay home. Then don't vote. But we've got to do better.'

Lightfoot made the remarks naming the only white and Latino challengers in the race, Paul Vallas, a former Chicago public schools chief and past city budget director, and fellow progressive Rep. Jesus 'Chuy' Garcia. She is also facing six black opponents in the race.
