Mark 12:18 Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 19 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23 At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
There have got to be special classes in Seminary College about the Resurrection of the Dead. I am not smart enough to figure that one out. I don't think God wants me to understand it yet, anyway. If God wanted me to get it, He would make sure I do.... but I don't.I do understand what was going on with the Sadducees' question though.
1. Remember in the Book of Ruth? Boaz had to check with the family before he could take her as his wife.
Once a woman married into a family, she was in that family forever. Her children would bare the family name, and they would be an example of what that family represents. If they are raised right, the family name will be respected. On top of that, the children were to be workers in the field. If the woman and children were allowed to just live on their own wits, the family would loose future workers. It was the labor force "the helpers" that prompted procreation in the first place. So, to keep the woman and labor force in the family, any brothers or cousins in the family, had to step up.
2. The Sadducees were trying to catch Jesus in a lie or in a misquote. They were looking for a reason to murder Him.
Why would the Sadducees be asking questions about the resurrection? They didn't believe in the resurrection anyway. It says so right there in verse 18. The very act of giving a woman to the husband's brother upon the demise of the husband, is barbaric! A woman should always be capable of choosing who she will sleep with. If she doesn't consent, it's rape.
Check it out.... Ruth chose Boaz. She slept at the bottom of his bed. Her mother-in-law knew Boaz and his family. Ruth was not Jewish and still they had to go through the family to get permission. Ruth couldn't, she had no say in the matter. Boaz had to. Only men could decide the fate of the women in those days.
HOWEVER, there is something in these verses that I do totally understand. It says here we will be LIKE angels.... not we will be angels.... but we will be LIKE angels. Sex is an earthly deal... designed to create the labor force. It's only fun so we will participate.
I hate to tell my dear friends who have lost their husbands that they will not be married when they get to Heaven. It causes them so much grief.
We will be like angels. Angels aren't interested in sex.
