Revelation 6:5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!”
7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Here's the link to the commentary I read. If you go to the link, you will see that I copied the whole summary for these verses.

A black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand: The scales symbolized the need to carefully measure and ration food. This speaks of a time of scarcity.
A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius: These prices are about twelve times higher than normal. It means that it would cost a day’s wage to buy the ingredients for a loaf of bread. This describes “a time of famine when life will be reduced to the barest necessities.” (Walvoord)
We often see great famine in the world today, yet fewer people suffer from hunger today than 100 years ago. However, understanding the world’s precarious ecological balance, it would not take much to plunge many into the kind of scarcity and inequity mentioned here.
Do not harm the oil and the wine: Yet, the nicer things will be available for those who can afford them. There will still be the oil and the wine that should not be harmed.
A pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death: This last rider shows that there will be a tremendous death toll from the dictatorship, war, famine and other calamities described by the previous three horsemen.
Our modern age has seen hundreds of millions killed by dictators, war, and famine. Yet all that will pale in comparison to the death toll coming in the wake of this ultimate dictator. No wonder Jesus said of this time For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. (Matthew 24:21)
Power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill: Power was given to the horseman, and given by God. Though all hell breaks loose on the earth, God is very much in control. He still holds the scroll and opens the seals.

I have this craving to ask, "what kind of oil?" Then I remind myself that John wrote this back on the Island of Patmos where he was sent because he was a follower of that Bastard Jesus. I say "that Bastard Jesus" because the Pharisees and the Sadducees saw that Jesus didn't fit nicely in their census. There was no human who could put his name as "father" of Mary's baby boy. She was betrothed to Joseph, but Joseph could not claim Jesus as his son. Jesus was the Son of God not Joseph or any other human. That's what Mary and Joseph and John the Baptist were saying. Jesus is the Son of God.

So, it would be silly to consider "what kind of oil?". They didn't have cars or trucks back when John wrote this. So, the only oil John would be talking about is "Olive Oil" which incidentally was used in anointing as well. In modern times the price of petroleum is also watched closely, because petroleum is now deeply entrenched in the world economy. Since God can see the future, and God would know when petroleum would become the newest liquid idol humans would become addicted to, about equal to booze, then maybe He was telling John about petroleum. We'll need the booze to handle all the strife we endure from the dispatching of the four horsemen. Guess the moonshiners all over the world might just become richer!!!

The Bible says oil and wine were to remain a stable price. You could still afford to anoint someone and then drink a toast to their success. But you couldn't afford the flour to make bread.

OK... now... back to the opening of the seals.

So, Jesus popped the third seal and a black horse was dispatched. Verse 6 says a voice from the throne [between the four creatures] said "take the scales" and remember, "don't bother the wine or the oil prices". This my friends would be a friendly recession, if there was no class system. But there was a class system. There was inequity. So, IMHO, this is a prediction of a major "depression" not just a recession.

My guess is, the rider on that black horse is going to make the depression of1929-1939 look like a big picnic.

Jesus popped the fourth seal and a pale horse was dispatched. THIS RIDER IS NOT JESUS. This horse is pale, not white, pale. The rider of the pale horse is Death. Verse 8 says Hades was following close behind Death. Was Hades on a regular horse, like the old gray mare? Did Hades need a horse at all?

The commentary says "This last rider shows that there will be a tremendous death toll from the dictatorship, war, famine and other calamities described by the previous three horsemen".

We just went through a pandemic [COVID 19] I tried to google "what percentage of the population died of covid 19" and well, I don't think it was 25% of the population of the world. I couldn't get a plain and simple answer to the question, but politics raised its hand. I would imagine the rider of the pale horse will visit the data specialists, doctors and politicians as well.

I think Gaza might give us just an inkling of how the world will appear when the riders of the third and fourth horses [with Hades pulling up the rear] are dispatched.

To quote a famous man.... "it'll be like no one has seen before".
