Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
I am giving you the link to verses 9-20 from the secure online site I use. The footnotes say these verses are not part of the original transcript. This is the footnote.
Some manuscripts have the following ending between verses 8 and 9, and one manuscript has it after verse 8 (omitting verses 9-20): Then they quickly reported all these instructions to those around Peter. After this, Jesus himself also sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.
Now remember, Mark was probably not there. He is probably reporting what the women told him. See, in the first verse he lists those women again. There was Mary Magdalene, the lady with the expensive perfume. Then there was the other Mary, the one with two sons who were disciples [but not the brothers of Jesus]. And Salome was there. She was the mother of the Zebedee boys, not [necessarily] the whore stepdaughter of Herod.
Yesterday, Mark reported that Joseph of Arimathea rolled the stone in front of the tomb, and I told you I doubt that to be the case. The stone was too heavy for one human to move. So, check out verse 3. Three women couldn't do it. It would have taken more than one man to move the stone into the slot or out of it.
The three women, apparently, reported to Mark that they saw a young man dressed in a white robe. That's what Mark reported here. The man in the white robe, according to Mark's report, explained that Jesus was risen and on His way to Galilee. Mark reported the young man gave them instructions.
Now... go to verse 7. It says, "tell His disciples and Peter".
Oh, Peter you are in such hot water for denying Jesus.
Those women took off. They were afraid. They said nothing to anyone! They didn't do as instructed?!? Wait... that's what the other verses were for. According to Mark [in either article] They told Peter and those around him. Jesus showed up later and gave them more instructions.
Yep, that sounds about right. They wouldn't have told just anyone. Either the body was stolen.... or Jesus, who was definitely dead, got up, rolled a stone no one man could move away from a tomb that was carved into solid stone, and walked away. No one would have believed them. So, they did as instructed... they went to find the disciples and Peter.
I think I should add, the tomb was a hollowed-out rock. When the stone was rolled against the entrance/exit, there would be very, very, very, limited oxygen. That young man could not have been a living human... right? There was no air to breath!
