I don't buy the referenda - and it should take more than a simple "vote" for such a transition. The latest round of referenda - people cowering in their homes, soldiers going door to door, collecting "votes" and unsurprisingly getting 94%+ "yes" votes. You know, kind of like what they get in Russia.
The original votes for independence were overhwhelmingly in favor - INCLUDING the current regions Russia claims - except Crimea, which I do agree, historically has only been part of Ukraine since 1954 when Kruschchev basically made it happen, probably flouting Russian law. The other regions, even the ones with high percentages of Russians - said no, we want independence. By a LOT.
Which leads me to be skeptical about the ones, since. You don't like living in Ukraine? I'm sure Russia would be glad to have you. They're losing population.
Do you think there are parts of THIS country - say, along our southern border - that would like to join Mexico? Why not? So very many of them are Mexican born, and sure, they'd like it to be Mexico. But it doesn't work that way. We have multiple state secessions where a clear majority of voters in a given county want to form a new state or join another one - and it doesn't happen. We have laws and procedures.
Large portions of the Baltic states have Russians or ethnic Russians - they don't get to carve off pieces of those countries to "join" Russia.
Look up Sudetenland - and what Hitler's excuse was for invasion. Germans should be part of Germany! They WANT to be part of the Fatherland! So he "annexed" them.
