Lindsey Vonn.

Anyone esle tired of the "poor girl fighting her way through injuries", story? The reporter didn't even look he was thrilled with doing the story..

I mean really.. she's no Kerri Strug (sp?).

She bruised this, she skied through this bruise, that bruise.. i can't Imagine ANY skier finishes a run, expecially the slalom runs, without multiple injuries..

I especially like the story of the "hurt wrist" at the worlds.. again, nothing more than a bruise and they show her prior to her start "playing through the pain" with her arm in a homemade sling, for a bruised wrist?? Really??

I think NBC and VONN should stop the dramatics, they look like total morons playing up non-injuries.

OH, now the latest.. She's skiing with a broken PINKY!!! She's such a HERO!!

At the end of the downhill I thought for sure she was vying for endorsement deals with whatever pain reliever company approached her first with the $$$.

I find it insulting when they compare current Olympians with past athletes..

Most of these athletes don't suffer or have to sacrifice for their sports like past Olympians..

Imagine if Apollo Ohno couldn't make any money off endoersements and had to bag groceries so he kept his "Amateur Status" until the next Olympics.. I would GUESS we wouldnt' be talking about his 8 or 9th medal at this point. All the top names have endorsement deals, and I'm sure there is a seperation of the classes at the games like there is everywhere.

It's sad really.. NO more no names getting their shot at fame.. No more amateurs getting their 10 minutes of fame before disappearing into oblivion to be mentioed in the 2020 edition of Trivial Pursuit..

Are there anymore "Amateur" competitions anymore, or is it if you don't have sponsors and money, you aren't competing on the world stage?

Is it really both parties doing that? That sounds like a media thing to garner viewership and fill airtime; I can't see what Vonn would gain from acting weak. But I have not been paying attention to the hype around her, nor have I watched her before these games.

I am sure the scouts know what they are looking for and are quick to jump on it when it comes along. And they have plenty of time to weed out the pack with all the regional and world championships that preclude the Olympics.

I can't fault the athletes too greatly for taking the money, as it allows them to train at the best facilities with the best team... and makes it so they don't have to bag groceries to support themselves. If they devote more time to training they should be better at what they do, which is good because I don't think the Grocery Bagging Championships would be quite as popular.

If Larry had posted this I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.

Larry is Bob's MPD.

And Bob, training costs money. We could do like the Russians and threaten our athletes with the gulag if they don't bring home a medal, but the ACLU frowns on that sort of thing. So our Olympians train hard, to the exclusion of just about everything else, and they have the very best coaches and equipment. And since Olympians are high visibility personalities, corporations will sponsor them in exchange for being able to use them to peddle product.

My guess is that, without the money from endorsements, these athletes wouldn't be near the machines they are, and the US wouldn't have 34 medals as of this writing. Many countries, including Germany, basically make their Olympians wards of the state and the government pays for their training.

Which just goes to show that Capitalism wins out over Socialism. :yay:

Those downhill runs can and do cause injury. You snag one of those gates(poles buried in the snow) and you will know it! If you get off balance and crash into one of those sidewall fences - at 40mph or more - you're going to wake up the next day with a pain that won't go away.

Been there...

:yeahthat:

On a side note, every time one of the athletes falls on the snow or in the ice rink, or crashes in the bobsled - I cringe! Agony of defeat, and all. OY!

OOOOH.. I;m so impressed by your manliness..

You don't have to ski her race to know about playing through pain.. I just don't consider "bruises" playing through pain.

Like I said, I'm sure ALL of them are bruised up at the end of every run, we just hear about it from her for EVERY bruise.

I'd even bet that she wasn't the only skier skiing with a broken finger seeing they already had a mitten made just for that injury.

Let's blame the media for that, not Lindsey Von. She can't possibly be a pain baby or a whiner or she wouldn't have made it to the Olympics in the first place.

And 90% of the time, short of serious injury, they get up and continue to compete.. You don't hear about their hangnails, or their scratches, or their bruises. They just get back up and do it again.

:yeahthat: Exactly as I've felt all along. The media stirs any pot to garner viewership or hype.
