line coming down comp screen

I have a Dell laptop (@ 4 years old). A couple days ago, a straight fine line, appeared on my screen (top to bottom-the entire length of the screen). It never goes away. I've tried shutting it down, but still comes back--does anyone have any ideas what is causing it?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

is it there in safe mode or bios?

I apologize, but I have no idea what you're talking about. My husband is on travel-he's the one who is computer literate. I guess I'll have to wait until he gets home!!!

Sounds like the hardware for the display has a bad driver (not software/firmware driver). You will either have to just put up with it; have the laptop repaired ($$$$), or replace the laptop.

Agreed. Straight line pixel loss is almost always a hardware failure.

Will it get worse? I can live with it like it is, it's a thin line. Did I do something to cause it?
Thanks alot for everyone's input.

Could, but there is no telling. Usually static electricity is the culprit. Static electricity that we do not see, hear, or feel can be thousands of volts. It jumps from us to the path of lest resistance to ground. Sometimes it kills a transistor, diode, or other electronic component.

Hi....if You Are Lucky Enough To Find Out What Is Causing The Line Down The Screen, Please Let Me Know......i Am Computer Challenged And Have'nt Been Able To Get An Answer From Anyone. I Have A Red Thin Line From Top To Bottom Of My Screen, Just Appeared One Day And Never Left. I Would Love To Know What Caused It. If You Have Any Info On Someone Who Will Do Repairs At Your Home, I Would Appreciate That As Well.......thanks Much

Why Are You Typing Like This? It's Just Annoying...Almost As Annoying As TYPING IN ALL CAPS.

PS: try reading the thread.

Whatever that line is....I have it too and have no idea what it is or how it got here......I'm computer illiterate, and don't have time to worry about it.........

It's Satan trying to talk to you through the computer. Pretty soon you'll be getting messages that say things like "kick your cat," and so on.

Please forgive me for annoying you, that was never my intention.I did'nt realize that there was anyone who would be offended by Caps in a note............it's so insignificant in my world.............there are so many other issues in life of importance to be concerned about....I wish you a blessed and beautiful day.

Daignosing your lines in the screen....
A) Reinstall display drivers. If you google how to do so you can probably find a good write up. All the drivers should be on your system restore disk.

b) replace video card if possible. This cannot be done with a laptop. If you have a desktop I recommend an ATI or NVIDIA.

c) Replace computer.

Thanks TotalEclipse31 for the advice.
Bluigal--If I do find out any info, I'll let you know. ALSO, YOUR TYPING ISN'T ANNOYING, MAYBE SOME PEOPLE JUST HAVE LOW TOLERANCE LEVELS FOR INSIGNIFICANT THINGS!!!!!

sometimes the connector either on the motherboard or connecting to the lcd screen is slightly loose and your getting a bad connection ...

but more likely the screen is having hardware issues and will never get any better
