Lithium batteries

I broke down a few years ago and got a lithium battery for my boat trolling motor. It was annoying lugging around the heavy lead battery. And those things wore down quick, especially on a windy day. So I had to take 2 of them sometimes.

A 12 volt battery weighs less than 15 pounds. I've yet to run it down to nothing.

The down side is they are pricey. I just wish I got a lithium from the start.

So it's time to go fishing. I put both batteries on charge. I now have 2 of them because on some big lakes I might need it and weight isn't an issue. Green light comes on. Yet it won't run anything. I use a different battery to verify the air pump is indeed working. It checks out.

I email tech support. They make a few suggestions. I do that and still no love. I take pictures of the battery. I use a meter and test the juice output. Not sure what's wrong. I call tech support. They have a call back option. I hate holding, so I try that.

After waiting most of the day, I get a call back about 6 hours later. We go through the testing steps together. Seems if they run down and stay that way for a few months they can have issues.

Good thing is they come with an 11 year warranty. Tech guy says it's a warranted issue. So I have 2 new batteries in the mail. With any luck they will be here soon. I'll make sure to charge them every other month when I'm not using them.

Shout out to Dakota Lithium for standing behind their product.

What you describe is a common occurrence with the BMS (battery management system). It can fail or 'go to sleep' and can be difficult to wake up, but the battery itself could be fine.

But moot point as you're getting them replaced. :yay:
Moot for this set, but not for others and maybe these replacements in the future. This does happen as you say. One of the most common failure modes is simply that the battery gets below the smart chargers low limit, so the charger wont even try. If you can trickle the battery back up to that low limit, you can bring them back from the dead. U use an adjustable power supply I got from Amazon and its helped a lot.
