Additional Information: The incident is an incendiary fire involving a Toyota SUV found burning at the dead end of Golf Course Drive in Mechanicsville. The fire completely destroyed the vehicle. A vehicle theft and a theft from vehicle were reported on the same street shortly after fire was extinguished and are believed to be related. Preliminary Cause: Improperly discarded smoking materials

Additional Information: The accidental fire was determined to be caused by improperly discarded smoking materials on the balcony of a second floor apartment. Just after 11:00 a.m. maintenance staff witnessed smoke coming from behind the apartments and went to investigate. The staff noticed a fire on the balcony and immediately started to evacuate multiple residences of the apartments. Four apartments sustained significant damage as a result of the fire. The occupants in a total of 16 units were affected by the incident and are displaced at this time. The American Red Cross was notified and will be assisting the displaced occupants.

Additional Information: The fire involved a Dodge Dakota which was parked in the driveway of 8640 Valley Drive in Waldorf. The vehicle sustained significant damage to the bed and passenger compartment. The fire was contained to the vehicle of origin and no injuries were reported. The investigation revealed the fire originated in the bed of the truck and was determined to be accidental.
