Local mail delivery

I’m looking for information about expected delivery turnaround from one local post office to another, literally from Leonardtown to Hollywood. Is there a crazy route that our local mail takes now? You know, through Capital Heights, then Albuquerque, and back to SoMD?

Unfortunately I had no other option, than to just let our local government send this awaited piece to me via postal delivery, and nobody will even return my call to confirm it’s even been mailed.

Unless you paid extra for tracking, no way to know.

I talked with the postal worker a while back on the blue boxes outside the post office. They had a slot for 'same zip code' and one for the rest. Worker said it didn't matter, they have to hand check them anyway because people always put the wrong mail in the wrong slot, so they all get tossed in the same bin.

I wouldn't doubt all mail goes from local to points north before being returned to local, just for convenience sake.

My guess is everything goes up to Capitol Heights.
Has to. That's where the inside operation at USPS sorts all the mail out that looks like commercial checks, and then sends those on to be scanned, washed, edited and illegally cashed. USPS got quite an operation going on and they refuse to even admit it..much less shut it down.

For incoming small packages, it goes to the "Southern Maryland Processing Center" wherever that is, then to the "Washington DC Processing Center" before being sent to Lex Park. Don't know if regular mail follows that route, or if those centers are involved in locally posted mail.

yep, even 20650 to 20650; That's why they no longer sort mail at the local Post Office.

BTW, you would be amazed at the route your FedEx and UPS packages take.

My divorce papers were mailed to me from 20650 to 20650. I never received them (2010). One year I felt festive and mailed Easter cards to 4 people in my family. Not ONE of them ever received their card (all in the area). I mail nothing anymore. I have no faith in FedEx anymore either. Within 3 days a few weeks ago, 2 packages of mine never delivered to me. I received the email and picture they were delivered. Pictures show on someone's porch chair but not mine. I also saw the truck drive by shortly before I got the email. Someone on my street got them. I can understand on occasion something lost but this is the norm now.

If you go in the post office, give it to a clerk, and they are in a good mood, they will make sure it goes to the correct PO box or carrier. I have done this in Leonardtown sending to Leonardtown.
