Local i would guess Best Buy and then Ritz (almost local). Cheaper and better selection to mail order. B&H Photo usually ships the same day and they are out of New York (i think) so UPS gets it here the next day. There are cheaper places then B&H but most don't have the reputation B&H does. I have also ordered camera gear from Amazon, JR Music World, and Beach Camera with good luck. Most good online stores also have a customer reviews section for each item. I always like reading what other buyers thought about the product before i shell out my money.

I usually do order online and read all the reviews... but today I have the urge to buy something and have it today

I would suggest calling Ritz before you drive up there. I have heard they don't have much in stock outside of the standard camera and lens so you might be out of luck with the filters. Maybe you can do to Michaels and get some of the colored plastic stuff and come up with some makeshift filters for the weekend. Google it, you might find some plans for it.

Which lens are you getting those for? A uv filter is great for protecting the front of your glass. A circular polarizer is a must in my opinion.

Here is something to think about though. Camera gear get expensive enough, don't buy stuff just to buy it. Make sure you are buying something you are needing to use. If you haven't run across a reason to have it or don't know what its used for, why buy it. As you are getting in to photography more and learn more, you will figure out what you really need, and wy you need it.

Most important items in my opinion are in this order.

Camera (you have to have it first)

Best quality glass you can afford (good glass is expensive, cost more than you camera half the time. Don't spend money on cheaper items, when you can save that money and get a good lens a little while down the road.

Next would be a external flash. This is useful indoors and out. Learn how to use it for fill flash work.

Circular polarizer for outside scenic photos. This brings out colors and cuts glare.

A good tripod. Try to get the best possible you can. Its like lenses, spend the money now, or you will spend it again later.

Here is a great article on buying a tripod.

I was reading about the circular polarizer earlier and am interested in getting that. I didn't realize all the different tripods. I thought that would be something simple and cheap to buy. Shows how much I know

This would be for my 55-200 lens. I didn't do the expensive one when I bought that and now I kinda regret it. One of my suppliers at work came down with his book of pictures to show me and you could see a HUGE difference in his photos because he bought a $1600 lens.

I know I should stick with what I have now and not buy anything new to play with. I still have so much to learn with just what I have now.

I am interested in a macro lens. What do you recommend for my Nikon D40? I have already told hubby that is what I want for Christmas  Now I need to make sure he gets the right one.

As JBR said please read up on items before buying them. A cpl is a must have item that you will love and makes a big difference when used in the sun, I suggest you get a good one as they are not all great quality. The el cheepo ones will add a grain like effect to the image.

I bought a tripod, monopod and a set a filters (clear, cpl and uvb) at walmart of all places....more for experimentation than anything....agree with deadeye---the cpl cheepo does 'soften" your shots--but I did learn what and when a cpl is good for....what else I'd like in a tripod(the walmart ones ok but I can see where a pro would have issues) Monopods are good butttttttt----I still find it difficult with movement in lowlight conditions to not have movement (unless I hold my breath-and I find I do that ALOT)
I thought...."you are using a P&S ---you don't need good glass.....well now that I have a website and potential to sell shots---IT IS an important prospect and I never thought I would say I would consider this as a potential for income but now I do......never say never!

J summed it up pretty well IMO. Not sure how "local" you are looking to stay, but Penn Camera has a store in Laurel you may want to check out Penn Camera, also the Best Buy in Waldorf has a much better selection of photography equipment than the one in California...some inexpensive CPL filters, UV, ND, Manfrotto and Velbon tripods, etc. Hell, they even have Nikon D700 bodies and SB-900 flash guns in stock! Ritz doesnt usually have a wide selection of accessories such as filters and tripods in stock.

Spend it now, or hope its on a Xmas list.

Ritz has 2 stores in Anna. one in the mall, and the other in the Harbor Center on Rt 2 just before Parole.

I got this. but brushed alum. not black. The 'comes with monopod' feature is why I got it.

And this gadget helps a lot with camera shake on the tripod. I know, I know, a good tripod shouldn't shake, but my heavy finger on the shutter button does give it a wobble.
