have to pull the oil plug on a John Deere 1020 older model farm tractor. It appears to need a male 8 point star socket...the opening about the size of my thumb.

Anyone know where I can locate that? Hubby drove all over Sat and had no luck.

We have an old JD I can ask M what size he uses on ours? You should be able to call Carroll's and they can tell ya what size and if they have it....

A piece of sqare shaft stock is all I've ever used. Works great. In fact, I think the original wrench was square.

If you look at the face of the plug, you will see the eight points. But if you look again, you will see that it really is 2 squares superimposed and skewed at 45 degrees to recieve a square plug wrench at 2 different angles of attack.

right. Double-square = 8 points.

See if the end of a 3/8 or 1/2" socket wrench will work.

I called Carrolls and this seems NOT to be the original plug from years back. All the other JDs that hubby serviced on the hay farn had the normal nut he could crack-off easily.

This is a recessed plug with a deeper male star confiquration...he used the word borad??? or something like that...

Is it an 8-point Nut, or it takes something like an 8-point star wrench which gets inserted into a recessed area (like an allen wrench)?

I have never seen an 8-point star "allen-type" wrench, but the make wrenches/sockets which have 6, 8 or 12 points for nuts.

It is a 8 TORX...upon just speaking to hubby he said the plug has a circular hole with 8 grooves surrounding it.

That was an awsome thought but it will NOT work in this application:buddies:

U R Welcome

It takes an old farmer to recognize farm tools

Or an old mech-a-nick.

Somewhere in my junk, I have a double-ended square-drive wrench. It looks something like a dog bone, with varying sizes of square drives on each "head." Only ever used it rarely, but it was handy when I needed it. I think some old differentials (connected to enclosed drive shafts) had those type of fill/drain plugs.
