I guess what I was trying to say is that if you find one for say $500, it's probably not a good idea. Puppy mills tend to charge lower prices than reputable breeders because they are just pumping out the puppies as fast as they can. Not to mention that the dogs/puppies are in horrible conditions & not cared for properly. They will also just breed to breed & don't look at health/temperament etc. So, in that aspect, the cheaper the dog, the more chance of problems(puppy mill dog). Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the most expensive is the best either. You always have people that will be greedy & make as much as they can. The bottom line is that the research must be done carefully & there must be time put into it to get the healthiest pet. Yes there are still things that can crop up anywhere, but at least you can try to avoid some problems. You are right, they have become very popular & most people don't realize what they are getting in to. They don't do enough research & then regret it later.
