Iran Says It Has Seized a British-Flagged Oil Tanker
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Friday that it had seized a British-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, amid mounting concerns over oil shipment disruptions in the Persian Gulf.

What does "British-flagged" mean? It's flying the flag of Britain? Why wouldn't they just say a "British oil tanker"?

Anyway, what does this mean to us? Is Britain our ally or not? It seems odd that they would malign our President, then come beg for help (again).

Means it registered in Britain. Could be owned by anyone anywhere in the world, so it could be a Taiwanese owned vessel. and tehre are a milllion reasons, usually invovling taxation, as to why someone would flag a vessell somewhere besides where the owner lives.

A couple of well aimed cruise missiles will have them taking their ball and going home, not wanting to play anymore.

I hope the Israeli navy needs some target practice here in the next few weeks.

I hope you know that Iran has updated their air defense system with both Russian and Chinese supplied equipment.
Which means there are probably both Russian and Chinese nationals in Iran working on that equipment.
If any NATO country launches on Iran, you could expect a response from Russia and China.
We will shoot at boats and drones, but won't infringe on their territory.

I disagree. Could be, but not necessarily (IIRC). Remember way back (before Gulf War I) when we reflagged a number of tankers to fly the U.S. flag (and the ensuing uproar b/c it "committed" us to defend ships that really had no connection to the U.S.)? Owner, registration, and flagging could all be different.

My guess here is whether the ship was UK flagged earlier or just recently this is in retaliation for the Gibraltar seizure.

I thought the Brit Navy was escorting Brit flagged vessels.
However long it was flying the UK flag I would have thought so as well

I know what you mean. I was crew on P-3s flying escort for those reflagged tankers in 1988. But I was operating under the impression that it anyone was reflagging vessels again, we would have heard. That assumption could be wrong, of course.

What about carpet bombing from 30,000 feet?

Yep, it can carry a British flag and be owned by a Mexican company and carry a Russian crew.

I suppose we will have to wait to see what the Brits have to say about it.

it's their responsibility, not ours.
IMO if the Russians or the Chinese sell them weapons and put their technicians there to teach then to use them---if they get blown awat ---tough titty.

Tough tittty is do you want to fight a multi front war with two or more nuclear armed enemies?
Just saying, you don't think the Iranians are acting tough because they think they can whoop our ass?
Will be interesting to see what Oman and Saudi Arabia do, since the two vessels hijacked were heading or coming from their ports
Direct threat to their economy, Saudis and Iran already at war (just not directly)

I was going to answer this but I scrolled down first to see if anyone else answered it.

The reason I knew it was because in my early 20's, I worked for Comsat (Communications Satellite Corp) & my job in revenue accounting was billing the Ship-to-Shore Telex and Telephone calls. One of the billing criteria was sorting those computer data records by the Flag/Country of Registration, and then it broke down to Ship name, Company name, and so forth.

My little trivia for the day.

Are Russia and China ready to start a third world war, perhaps a nuclear one?
Call their bluff.
China is growing more aggressive daily, it is only a matter of time before they take the whole of the China Sea if they aren't called on it soon.
Is Russia ready to start a war to protect this little sh1t country while they are fighting Muslims in their own country?
