Sometime between midnight and 5AM this morning my black labrador broke his chain and escaped. He has a thick, brown, leather collar and answers to Blackie. He's a very sweet boy.

If anyone sees him could you please, please, please pm me?! Husband and I are just sick over his disappearance and I have a 4 year old who is going to heartbroken when she wakes up and he's not here.

Thanks!!!!

If I were kept in the yard on a chain, I'd probably try to escape, too!

Well, we just moved into this house not so long ago and live on Rt. 231 and haven't had the time or the money to build a fence yet - so in the middle of the night when he has to go outside we sometimes just chain him up - or when we're to be gone for an extended period of time. He's mostly an indoor dog, though. I guess we just figured a chain was better than letting him run free by the highway . . .

He is not microchipped and does have tags. His collar wasn't left on the chain so I'm assuming it's all still intact.

Since you recently moved, is his tag info current? If he is a friendly dog, that betters the chances of a neighbor finding him and returning him to you.

Yes, his info is correct. Around feeding my sons, I've already talked to a couple of neighbors. I have one more kid to go then I will go drive around some more. I just want to put the word out everywhere I can.

Take a drive over to Tri County Shelter and look there...don't just call. Call the vets in the area.

Good luck.

I've called but they aren't open yet - not until 10:00.

Thanks for the tips on going and calling vets - I hadn't thought to do that!

Please post very big fliers everywhere!! Deliver them to your neighbors. Post in the grocery stores, etc in Calvert and McKay's, Food Lion, etc in St. Mary's. Not sure which side of the bridge you're on. Call and report it to the Tri-County Shelter and Humane Society.

On a side note - if he was a barker at night, someone may have let him off the chain unless you can tell it was broken. Also, there are many wild animals that can harm a dog, especially if it is tied. Don't know how old he is but he should be able to go through the night without going out. Maybe feed/give him water earlier in the evening and let him out right before bed.
An alternative to a complete fence could be an enclosure until a fence can be built. You may be able to find some pretty inexpensive ones in the ads. Something like this with a lock on the latch - dog kennel/cage for out side

Good Luck and I hope he makes it home quickly.

Make sure you GO to Tri County...they have a ton of black labs.

If you are on 231, he could be pretty much anywhere...lots of open land leading to the water...on both sides of 231.

 Labs like to run..people turn them in..lots of reasons. Black dogs don't get adopted. I said that, though, mainly because they have a lot of them right now and it's best to go ID your dog rather than depend on trying to communicate what it looks like over the phone.

He's FOUND!

After half a tank of gas and 3 calls to tri-county (just for anything picked up this morning) they finally had a match - when we got there, it was him! We're all happy to have him home!

Why don't black dogs get adopted?
