Lott again?

SmallTown

Football season!
Talk about beating a dead horse.. And the republicans go off on the dems about sour grapes after the elections. I suppose he fails to see that by his mistakes and thus "reorganizing" some of the leadership, it is a good thing for the party. I guess he fails to forget that many on the republican side, including the president, didn't like what he said either.. The rest of his ramblings look ok.. But the quote "he [Lott] is a Christian and a man of his word, I don't believe there is a racist bone in his body" Would make you wonder about this guys thinking... the KKK is full of white christians, both republicans and democrats.

As for tax cuts.. There is an intereting article this morning in the paper talking about the GOP governors who are in a bind.. They are still seeing red, and there aren't many programs left they want to cut. So they must decide to raise taxes, or cut some of "their" programs... Will be interesting to which route they take. I personally think that people will want the tax cuts more than the special programs.

Lott Isn't the Racist

Enough with the Trent Lott bashing already. The Democrats took extensive liberty with a statement he made, twisted it, distorted it, then continually bashed Mr. Lott until the media took up the charge, and then they started their own distortions. Eventually Mr. Lott succumbed to the media's lashings and resigned. Mr. Lott publicly apologized for any misinterpretation of his statement -- and since he is a Christian and a man of his word, I don't believe there is a racist bone in his body.

The Democratic leadership and the media are full of hypocrites. Our own lieutenant governor, Michael Steele, was the subject of racially charged comments -- and where was the outcry here in Maryland? Maryland's top Democrat, Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., called Mr. Steele an Uncle Tom; our congressman Steny Hoyer called Mr. Steele the token black Republican, and the Baltimore Sun stated Mr. Steele didn't bring anything to his office but his skin color. All of these are racist remarks. Seems Miller, Hoyer and the Sun believe a black man can't achieve a position of leadership on his own hard work and merit. How outlandish! Michael Steele has proven time and again he is a leader, intelligent and a man who has served his community, his state and his country impeccably.

The hypocrisy and bigotry in the Democratic Party and media are just mind-boggling, yet it seems everyone wants to ignore it. In my life experience I've found Republicans tend to be the ones who are truly colorblind and judge a person on his merit, while Democrats tend to focus strictly on skin color first.

To switch gears, referring to President Bush's tax cuts, Steny Hoyer is breaking out the tired old, "the tax cuts will go to the rich" mantra. Let's see, eliminating tax on dividends, eliminating the marriage penalty tax, increasing child-care credits and decreasing the top marginal tax rate of 27 percent to 25 percent to name a few, will help many people like me and I'm certainly not rich. Give it a rest, Steny Hoyer; the tax, tax, spend, spend days of the Democratic Party are over.

Good God, ST, you're bringing up alotta stuff here. I don't know where to begin...

With Steele, white Democrats were not the only people that were calling him an Uncle Tom, plenty of blacks did it as well. I have seen the assertion that the Democratic Party is racist several times here on these forums. This is a view that is fundamentally wrong and one that is not endorsed by the mainstream of society. What are Mr. Steele's qualifications for Lt. Gov.? Let's see he was an unsuccessful candidate for the GOP nomination for comptroller in 1998. (Imagine that a black lost in a Republican primary to a white man.) He was the party chairman for four years. Whoopdy doo, so what, how do you serve the community as the chairman of a party? He is the token black of the MD GOP. Name another prominent black Republican in this state. As for the Democrats, there are Rep. Cummings and Wynn, former County Executive Wayne Curry, former County Councilman Isiah Legget, former Mayor Kurt Schmoke, County Executive Esteep. Name one reason besides his race that Mr. Steele was selected to run with Ehrlich. Do not tell me that you are naive enough to think that it was because of his merit. To prove my point that the GOP, especially in St. Mary's is racist, take a look at the results for the GOP primary in the district 4 race for county commissioner. Charles Newkirk, a black man, lost to Vernon Gray, a man that has won three or four times before and lost each time in the primary. Yet when he ran against the black, he won by a landslide even though he attended no forums because he "did not want to be on the stage with that man." Makes me wonder.

How were Trent Lott's comments twisted? He praised the candidacy of a segregationist presidential candidate not for the first time, but for the second time. He opposed the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the extension of the Voting Rights Act, stated that the spirit of Jefferson Davis lives in the 1984 Republican platform, said that the Council of Conservative Citizens had the right principles. It was time for him to go. At least the man that he praised had the right idea to mend his racist stands. How many blacks ever worked for Trent Lott?

The bulk of President Bush's tax cut does go to the rich. It will not foster economic growth. Do not think that I am just making this up because it is a fact that is endorsed by many leading economists. His 'stimulus" plan is a tax cut with a different label. There is a better way to do things. Under Bush's plan people who make less than $20,000 a year get a $100 a year tax break. Under the Democratic plan, those people get a $300 a year tax break. There are flaws in the Democratic plan in that once the income is past $40,000 the president's plan provides more return money but the President's plan is far too costly for a nation that has a $290 billion deficit and the possibility of war in two nations.

As for the report on the GOP governors, the paper said that most of them have already raised taxes rather than cut spending.
