I am sorry I'd I misspelled your user name but I have question for you since you are in the insurance industry. My MIL went to register a car yesterday after many months od car trouble etc. The car has been on our insurance policy since September of 2011 it has been through inspection threes times and is at this point ready to be tagged.

When she went to the MVA yesterday they told her she had a red flag on her DL. She is in late 60's and only traveles as far as the park they gave her a bunch of numbers to call but she has been taking care of her elderly mother so which has prevented her from calling any idea what would cause a red flag on the license?

Thanks in advance.

Does she have any outstanding fines w/ the MVA or unpaid tickets?

I can not imagine that she would. She's 68 years old. Her and my fiancé are all on the same policy and he has renewed tags on two cars in February of this year. H e has three cars in his name this car was to be titled jointly.

I've had clients who the mva put a marker on their DL for fines from up to 10 years previous. Not saying that is the case here but could be one of the reasons.

But since MVA wouldnt tell her while she was there what the issue was it could be something else.

Red Flags

Red flags are the latest technique for "CONTROL" to include if you are behind in your taxes. From the DMV web site.

Registration - Vehicle Flags

Some of the more common reasons why a flag may be placed include:

Insurance compliance violation – the MVA’s vehicle insurance records indicate a problem. See Insurance Requirements for Maryland Vehicles for information about insurance requirements;
Returned check – you may have submitted a check to the MVA that was not processed by your bank;
Red light camera violation – your vehicle was captured in a photograph showing that it ran a red light;
Parking violation – your vehicle received a parking citation;
Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) violation – the MVA’s records on your vehicle’s emissions inspections indicate a problem. See Vehicle Emissions for more information;
Safety Equipment Repair Order (SERO) violation – you may not have returned proof that your vehicle was repaired after being stopped for a safety-related problem (e.g., headlight was burned out). See the infoMVA process description entitled Safety Equipment Repair Order (SERO) for more information.
Law enforcement agency referral – a law enforcement agency requested the placement of a flag for a variety of reasons;
Abandoned vehicle violation – a law enforcement agency identified your vehicle as abandoned;
Title violation – a problem may exist in connection with the titling of your vehicle;
Salvage vehicle violation – a problem may exist in connection with your salvaged vehicle;
Public Service Commission violation - your vehicle is not in compliance with the PSC.
Toll facilities violation- your vehicle was captured in a photograph when the required toll was not paid.
Comptroller violation - the Comptroller's office has recorded a violation due to an individual or business owing undisputed taxes. For additional information individuals may call 855-213-6669 and businesses may call 410-649-0633. You may also contact the Comptroller's office by logging onto mvahold@comp.state.md.us.
Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) violation - the DLLR has recorded a violation due to an individual or business owing undisputed unemployment insurance contributions. For additional information you may contact DLLR at 410-767-2699 or e-mail DLLR at licnrelease@dllr.state.md.us.
Speed camera violation – your vehicle was captured in a photograph showing it exceeded the posted speed limit.
Administrative fee owed – the MVA places an additional, administrative fee flag if the original flag was placed as a result of a red light camera violation, parking violation, speed camera violation, or toll facilities violation. For more information about this flag, see the question below about paying the administrative fee

Thanks Maddog but the taxes are current, she has no tickets that I or she is aware of. They changed insurance companies over two years ago. As I stated my fiancé just renewed tags in 02-2012 on two of his vehicles. He does travel back and forth between here between NYC, Conneticut and far as Maine as he is a Merchant Marine. I would think though if he had a EZ pass fine it would flag his license and not hers.

I read all that on the MVA site but the answers are vague and the MVA can be a PITA to deal with.

You can get a copy of her driving record for $9 non-certified and $12 certified from the MVA web site and you won't have to deal with the hassle of dealing with the MVA folks in person to get the information you need:

https://securetransactions.mva.mary...ndowGuid=8f2ff59e-e709-48cb-887b-33c26e5eb85f

Click on 'Driving Record' under 'Driver Services' to start the process.
