Another verse might say, "wars and rumors of wars" but Luke uses the word "commotions" and I'm seeing more and more commotions in the news every day.
Luke 21:9 But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.

The point of this is not to suggest a date or be irresponsible like that because I don't know anymore than everyone else but the word "commotions" is pretty interesting.
I feel that the signs like wars and rumors of wars is very general because every country can probably name wars like Revolutionary War, 1812, Civil War, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Korea, Gulf War, etc. The word "commotions" does contain the word "confusion" and we aren't in confusion yet but the ones in the Amtrak derailment were in confusion for those involved.
"by and by" is omitted in the RV but it can mean straightway or without delay.
Shortly:
"straightway, directly," is translated "shortly" in 3Jo 1:14 . The general use of the word suggests something sooner than "shortly."

So which one of those wars would have had "shortly" connected with it? I actually think it is talking about Israel. That is the problem with anyone interpreting scripture and we don't know and that shows how hard it is for us to know because no one knows the day or the hour and if I did know, Jesus wouldn't come on that day or that hour.
If Jesus didn't care about us, why would he tell us? If he did tell us, wouldn't that be so we would like he cares about us?
And if he cares about us, I don't think we would be left behind.
