Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

Luke 22:39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

In Matthew and Mark, we've been here before. This is where the transfiguration took place. This was a favorite place of prayer for our Lord. Jesus and the disciples have moved from the Upper Room to the Garden of Gethsemane at the Mount of Olives. Luke brings some different information here.

Jesus prayed that His Father would "take this cup" away from Him if there was any way possible. He knew what was going to happen. He knew He was going to be arrested, crucified, and raise again. He knew He would be leaving His disciples behind. He knew that I was going to be a sinner and He knew He was going to do this all for me.

An angel came to take care of Him. He was in so much anguish... an Angel came to take care of Him. He was so distraught by what was going to happen next, He was sweating blood.... not bullets.... blood. He was in so much anguish.... He was near death.

We know there was another son who was going to be sacrificed for sins. Abraham took Isaac, bound him and laid him on the alter. Just as Abraham was about to thrust the knife in his son, God intervened and provided another sacrifice.

Can you imagine the fear and anguish Isaac and Abraham felt? Can you imagine what it must have been like to be tied up and laid atop an alter knowing that the alter was for sacrifice? Can you imagine what it would be like to be innocent and in so much danger?

Finally, we are reminded of the tremendous power of prayer. Prayer, in this text, did not deliver our Lord from suffering, but it did deliver Him through it. So often we pray that God might get us out of adversity, rather than through it. Prayer is one of God’s primary provisions for our endurance and perseverance. His words to His disciples apply to us as well: “Pray that you will not fall into temptation."

There is so much more I could write.... but here comes Judas to betray Him.
