Lyme Disease Film Sheds Light On Debate

The faces of Lyme disease are men, women, old and young. They're all infected by the tick-borne illness and they're a part of new film documenting what they say is an emerging epidemic, larger than AIDS, that's going undiagnosed because too many doctors aren't properly diagnosing and treating the disease...

Lyme Disease Film Sheds Light On Debate - Doreen Gentzler News Story - WRC | Washington

Good story. Dr. Stephen Cafferty in Northern St. Mary's is probably one of the best to see if you think you have Lyme disease. I've been to doctors who don't take it seriously. He does.

Many doctors don't treat lyme aggressively because they don't want the insurance companies coming after them and trying to have their medical license revoked. It is happening everywhere. :ohwell:

When my daughter was finally tested for lyme, after month's of asking several doctors to please test her, we took her to Children's Hospital in DC and was told by the infectious disease :"specialists" that if she didn't get better after 4-6 weeks of antibiotics, then she didn't have lyme.

It was a very eye opening experience. I've learned not to put blind faith in the medical profession. It took a very long time to find a "lyme literate" doctor who didn't follow the rules set by the CDC and the insurance companies.

My kid went from not being able to walk, to being completely symptom free for over five years. :yay:

I saw him when he was in Lusby. He diagnosed me with Lyme, even when the tests were not positive, according to the CDC regs. Some of the bands were positive, but not enough according to them. Of course, I had so many other symptoms. He was the only one that said Lyme, though. Everyone else said that it was an old case of mono, maybe RA, maybe lupus, blah, blah, blah. By the time I got to him, it was in my neurological system. He got me started on antibiotics via PICC line right away. I couldn't believe the difference so quickly. After 3 months, all my symptoms were gone and I was back to normal. I highly recommend him!

Dr.Cafferty has been my doctor for many years now and he is treating me for chronic Lyme disease . I went threw treatment 2 years ago after going undiagnosed for a year first oral doxycycline then Iv rocephin for 4 months. I was somewhat better for 6 month following that treatment then all of my problems came back worse along with new problems and after once again doing 30 days oral doxycycline without any relief I had the picc line put back in and I'm on my 4Th week of daily rocephin treatment.

I was told by my insurance company and the medical supplier that since my last treatment 2 years ago they have changed their policy regarding payment for Lyme disease treatment beyond the first 28 days since the CDC sees no health benefit for treatment beyond 28 days at the most. After the first 28 days of my treatment my doctor ordered another 28 days more since I still haven't had a relief of my symptoms and I recieved a call from the medical company saying they were waiting for authorization to ship my medication and supplies and they weren't going to ship any medication until then unless I had a credit card to ensure they would be paid if my insurance company later denied payment.

It took a week for my insurance company to finally approve further treatment of which I am grateful but during that week I had to suffer without my medication and had to continue to use saline and heparin to make sure I didn't get a blood clot. I think they approved further treatment because they know from my medical records I have gotten worse and have new health problems from the Lyme disease and it could cost more money down the road if they denied me now? I am grateful they approved further treatment but it makes me so upset for them to deny payment for treatment even though they have the orders from the doctor showing the need for further treatment.

If you were to see me you might not think there is anything wrong with me from my outward appearance but until you have Lyme disease or know someone who does you have no idea what it does to you both mentally and physically.

He just told me I have Lymes with 5 bands, I requested a copy of my test, it only shows 2 bands and says negative. I don't know what is going on.

Try this support group website. I got the address here and it's very informative.

Also... there's this one too

You need to know that you'll probably get sicker before you get better. It's no fun.... and I'm not enjoying Lymes at all.

[On a side note... from the other forum... it's not easy having someon like SouthernYankee bashing the one doctor who would diagnose Lymes]... I've probably had Lymes for years.... I've already got permanent nerve damage.... I'm thankful for Dr. Cafferty.... :coffee:
