Lymes Disease

On Monday p.m. I noticed my 11 y/o Rottie had a dry cough. On Tues. a.m. he could barely walk on his front left leg. Obviously he's usually a lil' stiff this time of year (in his hind end) due to arthritis so I couldn't even imagine what (during the night) he could have done to his leg. Immediately made a vet. apt. for that p.m. The cough...they're not sure why he has...Doc. did blood test for heart worms which came back neg. and Lymes Disease which came back strongly positive. I use Frontline religiously and stated that to the Vet. (his response nothing is 100%) which I understand. Why is that this literally happened OVER NIGHT! So he's on a regimen of 6 pills per day (looks like doxycycline) for 5 weeks. It's only been 2 days but I guess I was expecting some miraculous improvement....this a.m. he couldn't get off the couch and has completly refused to eat! I'm worried! This dog has NEVER been sick a day in his life! :bawl:

Same thing with my older dog a week ago. He has this and is on antibiotics for 3 weeks, 2 pills a day and pain meds as needed. Within 24 hours of being on meds, he was back to normal.

My dogs get the Lymes vaccine... did you dogs get the vaccine and it failed or were they not vaccinated...

Yep Vet. told me that I should see a huge difference within 2 days! Sooo, I'm waiting....He didn't give me any pain meds for him though!

I'm going to do some research on the fail rate of this vaccine. We are in a HIGH Lymes area and I really did think I had protected my dogs.

That is what made the biggest different. My dog could not hold his head up. He was in such pain that he would shake and his pupils were dialated. The vet gave him a shot for pain at the office and sent him home with metacam. He was a little achey last night, seemed to hurt a bit, so I gave him some pain meds.

Good idea and let us know! I take all precautions with ALL of my animals and this has me baffled!

You will be intersted in what you find with regard to all vaccines for dogs.

K...I'm gonna give a call up there and see if I can pick something up for him! I can't stand seeing him like this!

I am already aware that there are some recommendations that some vaccinations NOT be done yearly, but I haven't been able to find any guidelines that make it clear as to what is really best for the pet. I do know that I don't trust a vet's opinion on this because yearly "well baby" checkups/vaccinations for pets is their gravy train.

Hey, what were his symptoms? my Shepard has been favoring one of his legs the last week or so, i thought it was his paw but i can squeeze it and do anything with it. i think his problem may be higher up, like in his shoulder. he had an "issue" a few months ago with his leg, and took him to the vet, was told that it was growing pains, but i figured he should be over those now.

When my dog had lyme disease he screamed when he had to stand up. But he's a big baby.

Had a recent bout with this.... believe it or not, i've been told that the best thing on the market is an herb called samento. You can buy it from Nutramedix and in the clinical trials, it worked better than antibiotics. I have a friend who gives it to his dog, who had been having problems with joint pain/arthritis, and the dog is doing alot better... Just FYI....

Read my first post....lethargic, not eating so much, really stiff...but actually wouldn't walk on his left front and a temp. The Vet. found no injury in foot/ankle...and believed it to be in shoulder joint. You've seen Roscoe...he's a big boy and if he don't eat there's a problem!

UPDATE: Took the Doxyclyine back and got Amoxicillan, Rimydyl (I know I'm not spelling right) and Baytril. As of this morning he is BACK TO HIS OLD Self...jumping around like a pup and eating everything in sight! WHEW...I'm so relieved and glad I immediately took action!
