Mac Versus PC

I haven't owned a Mac since 1988. I'm looking at purchasing a new system soon and I'm considering going back to the Mac platform. Are they good for gaming? Anyone have one?

I saw this when it was posted. Platform security and stability are what interested me in the Mac, but not if I sacrifice a lot of performance for it. My next machine will need to run the latest gaming titles for the next two years at least. Running OS X on the PC will not solve the security issues with Windows.

Mac sucks. Get a PC.
Thanks for your technical assessment!

Macs were great until Microsoft stole the windows concept and built the PC juggernaut. I'm looking for a way to avoid PC security issues while retaining PC software performance. Virtual PC for Mac OS X is pretty pricey when you factor in the cost of the XP OS you have to buy to overlay on Virtual PC. The combined version runs $250+.

I'll probably just end up getting a Dell XPS.

Quit gaming and you won't need to buy either. :neener:

NAH! Keeps us young.

So... Steve, what graphics card are you getting with your rig. I just got a nVidia GeForce 6600 GT, 128mb and upgraded to 1gb RAM. Made a huge difference on Far Cry and Joint Operations.

I upgraded my youngest computer to nVidia 5500 in the summer, still at 512MB. The boost helped with the game du jour, MoH: Pacific Assault, but I've about reached the limit in performance without a chipset and power supply overhall. So...

I just loaded my Dell cart with an XPS 600, dual-core 3.0 GHz D processor, 2 GB RAM, and nVidia 7800 GTX. The bottom line in game performance still rests with video card, processor speed, and RAM, so this configuration at $2500 should last me awhile, with room for expansion in the future when component prices come down. I could have thrown in a faster dual-core chip and dual video cards, but the price became prohibitive at $3700.

Now I just have to be patient and wait for holiday deals and discounts above the free 19" flat panel monitor they're offering now.

I think MAC's still lack badly in the game area. Far fewer games are released on MAC and most that are released come out well after the PC release. I don't even know who sells them anymore. None of the big places seem to.

Nope, I do ok but when you start talking about dual core crynogetically cooled microprocessors with flux capcitor based giga memory bubbles hot synched to a 1.21 gigawatt video card with 1.6 bagillion microraster with a 5X DVD cup holder I am lost.

Personally, I think the Mac runs circles around PCs in any graphics-intensive program. You will rarely see a graphics artist use anything BUT a Mac and many serious gamers use them. The big downfall is the availability of programs to run on it. By keeping the system proprietary, Apple shot itself in the foot.

Just run your configuration with the discount. BTW, too bad Dell does sell AMD systems yet... their dual core rocks!

Too bad Apple isn't selling OS X for x86 PC's even when they switch to the x86 architecture. :-(
