Making a rug??

I have a 4x6 burgundy area rug.. I want to bleach/dye a design on it. Anyone ever heard of doing this?

Personally, I have never done it. I'm thinking if you bleached the design you may cause the fibers to break down and then it would fall apart in that area. I would stick with the dye.

It's so dark, dye won't do. I can get some dye remover, but I'm wondering what tool I'de use to apply the design.

Gel bleach would most likely work, I guess you could use some type of paint brush. Are you going to free hand draw the design or use a stencil? I still think if you use bleach you may cause damage and make the fibers weak. I have spilled bleach on towels and after a few washes they will get a hole where the bleach was. Good luck, would like to see how it turns out if you are able to figure it out.

I'm just brain storming.. I may try both the dye remover and bleach pen on an inconspicuous area before tackling the major part.

Hmm. I wonder if a carpet store would give me half a dozen samples to try out some designs...I want a batik look and someone else may like it too.

rug?

Did you figure out how to bleach your rug? I've just come across the instructions on how to dye with bleach, I can copy the article and mail it to you if you need it.

It isn't on the computer, it was an article I took from a magazine. Threads, August/September 1997. I can send you a copy if you PM me your address.
