We are thinking of getting a malamute puppy, but aren't sure. Is there anything about them we should know before hand?

they can be very protective and attack other dogs in an instant. Once they get the taste of blood they like it. These dogs are made for cold climates, not southern.
My friend had one and it just about killed a couple of dogs and it tore up my friends' calf and her mothers leg also because he was so intent on getting to another dog.

I wouldn't go that far with that breed, but I would certainly do the research online before purchasing one as all breeds.

I am with a rescue group and have 3 boxers with one in foster care. They call me the two legged boxer. If that tells you anything, do your research. :yay:

I rescued one from Charles County Animal Shelter when he was almost 1 year old. This was 14 or so years ago.

To me he was a wonderful Dog, very loyal, loving and obiendient.

Got along with other dogs {2 Great Danes} cats, horses, and a pet pygmy goat.

He did have a natural drive. Did not like to be contained. Excessive digger, climber and would chew through almost anything including a heavy duty chain link kennel. His kennel was 6 ft high and 20 ft wide x 80 ft long. With an
8 x 10 Shed that was converted into a dog home with beds, fans in the summer and heat in the winter.

He absolutley hated being in the house. We tried to convert him but He was not happy being in the house. Winters were his favorit time snow even better.

This boy could predict a thunderstorm in route from 3-4 hours away. Great hearing....It would start out, with wimpering. and slowly escalate in to yelping. For how ever long the storm was in route. Tranquilizers did not help. Bringing him into the house made it worse. He wanted out side. As soon as the rain storm arrived he played outside in the rain. His yelping was why his previous owners gave him up along with his chewing through walls of the home.

Like I said he was a great dog. Not aggressive Loved people animals and children.

He loved his daily grooming, Hair.... more than any other dog I have even owned.

Would I do it again, if the right one came along.

I now have 2 american eskimos, and a border collie. The hair is a given. I love the breed.

Well, to make a long story short it was a scam. They said they suddenly relocted from dc to missiorie and didn't like the food and climate for the puppy there so they had to sell her. That part made no sense to us, but when they said they wanted us to send them a 300 dollar shipping charge then they would send us the dog, we knew it was a scam. What about a huskey puppy? how are they?

Then what type of pup is right for us? We have vistors a lot and 13 chickens, 2 ducks, a rabbit, a cat, but no dog. We want it to stay out side most of the time though. But we want it to be med. to large when full grown.

My parents have had them for years. 5 of them. Not one of them has been the slightest bit aggresive. You sure you're talking about the Malamutes? I've been around tons of them. NEVER have I met a vicious Malamute.

I have two purebred Husky's and a shepherd/husky mix. The two purebreds are far from guard dogs. They are so friendlyand make a great family pet, we have two 5 year olds. The older one looks extremly intimidating but all he does is lick. The puppy is just now realizing she has a voice so she barks when the mix barks. They shed a ton, I can fill a grocery bag in one sitting with the big guy. Not to mention when it is bath time, it takes him about two days to dry. We are going to get a plastic kiddie pool this summer for them to play in because it gets so hot and they love the cold weather. The youngest loves to be in the rain. Have you thought about a retriever/lab? They are the more popular pick around here

I love the breed. They've been wonderful pets. Personally, I adore the heck out of Chocolate Labs. That's what I would strongly recommend for a family pet. They are sweet and so much fun. The bf has one and he's just a hoot. He's very gentle around the kids too. They also are the cutest darn puppies.
