Mallows Bay

Located in Chuck Co. near Nanjemoy...

Anyone ever been to it?? It's supposed to harbor the largest fleet of sunken vessels in the western hemisphere...

I stumbled across it looking for a brigadier and iron clad ship. I googled it and saw an awesome pic clearly outlining all the ship hulls.

Well I ventured out to the middle of nowhere today to get some pictures of this. Ghost Fleet of Mallow's Bay (Note! The first road going in is marked "No Trespassing" Land owned by Charles County Gov't. The second road had a gate, but no signs) After about a 1/2-3/4 mile walk from the main road to get there, here's what I found. Looks like you need to launch a Kayak from somewhere to get closer to the largest section of hulls. Anyone know from where? Lots of posted private land around there. How far is it from the base in Indian Head and do they have a place to launch from? If you might know someone who owns property down there please PM me with contact info. OK here's the pics

:lmao: Sweet, isn't it?

Judging by the accuracy of my thumb... it'd be a good 9 miles from Smallwood Park.

Looks like you went with pretty low tide, but still not as low as one time I was there. That time I could walk up to the ship in the last photo.

Next time I'll figure out how to get from picture 3 to that other shore. Inflatable raft and waterproof bag for the camera.

I'm looking at #3 as one facing the big cargo ship.

If you mean the other side of the bay, you can be within a few feet of the other side by walking along the jetty that parallels the ship in the next to last photo [on a low tide day].

Or you can hike all the way around, but it's a heck of a walk.

Sure. There were a couple times I was tempted to get a running start and go for it... but I was barely smart enough to know that was a baaaaad idea.

Here is one of that section. The water is not low, but you can tell it's shallow...

This next one is of that one ship the day the tide was super low. It's amazing how much stuff is hidden in the shallows...

I have gone through that old home numerous times as well. There are a couple other settlements around there, but I think that is the most intact...

Sometimes there must be a team of beavers working...

Stubborn and opinionated
Mallows was always a good spot to chunk a jig for the big bass. All that iron played hell on the boat hulls though.
