Map that named America is a puzzle for researchers

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The only surviving copy of the 500-year-old map that first used the name America goes on permanent display this month at the Library of Congress, but even as it prepares for its debut, the 1507 Waldseemuller map remains a puzzle for researchers.

Why did the mapmaker name the territory America and then change his mind later? How was he able to draw South America so accurately? Why did he put a huge ocean west of America years before European explorers discovered the Pacific?"

Logical explanation is it's a hoax. Either that, or the intelligent designer spoke privately to the mapmaker.

He probably put a large ocean on the west coast because he knew there had to be a reason no one had walked over from there and the ocoean was the easiest answer.

There are actually maps of mysterious origins. Like the 17th century map showing Antartica as two separate land mass, which was only discovered recently by sonar soundings.

Just as well.

All the crap between the East and West coasts don't matter anyway. Might as well save the paper space for something useful.
