He was in Marine Boot Camp and his rank was most likely private…someone sending him a letter addressed to ‘Gunny” would have gotten him a lot of unwanted attention.

Like R. Lee Ermey who had everyone call him Gunny despite never earning that rank while in the military. He was awarded an honorary rank after he became a tv star.
