Mark Martin replaces injured Denny Hamlin

Keep Calm and Don't Care!
Joe Gibbs Racing announces today that Mark Martin will drive the No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series while Denny Hamlin recovers from an L1 Compression Fracture suffered during an accident on March 24 at Auto Club Speedway.

“We’ve been real fortunate to have never been in this situation with the need to find someone to fill in for an injured driver,” said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing. “A lot goes into a decision like this but we are really pleased to have someone of the character and caliber of Mark Martin to fill in while Denny is out. Obviously we’re not exactly sure how long that is going to take, but Mark’s career speaks for itself and our team knows it will have the opportunity to compete for a win every week.”

Martin will make his first start for JGR in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, April 7. Martin has made one previous appearance for JGR when he started in the NASCAR Nationwide Series last March at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and finished second.

Martin has one of the most distinguished careers in NASCAR history having made his first Sprint Cup Series start in 1981. Over his 31 years in the sport he has made 858 starts in the Sprint Cup Series and compiled 40 wins, 271 top-five and 449 top-ten finishes. He has earned 56 pole awards as well. He also has 49 career wins in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

“I’m happy to have this opportunity to help out JGR, FedEx and Denny,” said Martin. “Hopefully I can keep those guys up front and compete for wins while Denny heals up.”

In 48 career starts at Martinsville Speedway Martin has earned two wins, 12 top-five and 25 top-ten finishes along with two poles. He has a career average finish of 13.3 at the famed short track known as the paperclip.

“I just hate not being able to be in the car right now, but I really appreciate Mark being able to fill in for me,” said Hamlin. “Like everyone in NASCAR, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mark and I know he will keep that FedEx Camry up front until I get back behind the wheel.”

Guess I'm a Gibbs fan for at least the next five races! :yahoo:

That's your criteria? stick to F1 ....... How many races has MWR won compared to JGR since JGR switched to Toyota?

Yeah, that's my criteria, better performance and better final standings. Life's a bitch ain't it.

How many championships has JGR won since Stewart left and started running Hendrick engines?

So that's why MWR had two cars in the chase and JGR had one. Thanks for clearing that up, like mud.

:coffee: How many Sprint Championships do MWR have ! JGR has 2 . Until Hamlin went out , JGR had GOOD chance of all 3 drivers in Chase . Odds are still good because Hamlin upon return will kick some A$$ and WIN 3-4 races (IMO)

No way in hell does Dummy Hammerhead make the chase.

Back to the OP, Martin is only racing for JGR because that is an open date on his part time schedule for MWR.

You all know that, or should at least.

Read this and weep boys:
Martin will return to MWR car after Martinsville

Even he wasn't going back, he would not be driving for Gibbs, the 3 driver presently driving for JGR are better than Mark right now and all can argue they are better than Martin ever was. JGR has a better stable than MWR

You mean five son.

Brian Vickers drives the 20 in NNS and Elliot Sadler drives the 11 in NNS. Both are former cup drivers and both compete in Cup on a part time basis. Vickers for MWR and Sadler for RCR.

Dummy just got his back broke by little ole Joey (Slice).

For someone who knows it all you sure don't know much.:killingme

I got you to talk smack about Martin too!:roflmao:

You got me old wise one...... I don't think saying Marks better racing days are behind him is talking smack, it's a reality..... Mark has definitely won more races than either Matt, Kyle or Denny over the past ten years, you've proved your point.

Hope you have a nice Easter

A side note; your boy Vickers will be driving the 11 car after Martinsville .....

That was in the article I posted the link to back in post #12. It only makes sense, Vickers is already driving full time for JGR in NNS. He's not exactly my boy, but I think he has earned some track cred though. Bad and good.:killingme

P.S. I didn't disagree with you about Martin, I'm just good at twisting people's words around. I should have been a lawyer:roflmao:

Hope you have a nice Easter too.:yay:

So you think Dummy will miss 5 races and still make the chase? I'll have to reconsider who the bigger Dummy is.:killingme

He will come back with a least 20 races left . All he needs will be several WINS (2-4) to make chase . Points wouldn't matter
