A visitor has provided me photos of the Steak In A Sack restaurant in the Marlow Heights Shopping Center, which is still open, believe it or not. I remember this place way back when I was in grade school at Sandymount Elementary, so that's late 60s at least. I also have curent photos of Iverson Mall, which is still open but unfortunately just a shell of its once thriving self from the 60s and 70s. Remember, though, how fun it was shopping there back at that time, especially during Christmas and for school shopping? Remember the funky Sumi's store? The Italian deli on the second level? The pet store? The Jr. Hot Shoppes out front?

Hi Chuck,

Another fast food restaurant, which has stood the test of time and changing demographics of Marlow Heights, is Arthur Treacher's (Fish & Chips) seafood. When I was a teen during the early 1970's, my parents and I used to frequent that restaurant about once every other weekend.

Ah, yes, the Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips. Wasn't that on St. Barnabus Road, not far from the Safeway? I haven't thought much about the place, because I don't really recall frequenting it when I was growing up in Marlow Heights. I mean, I knew it was there, but we were more inclined to go to Jr. Hot Shoppes, Red Barn, Roy Rogers, Hot Shoppes Cafeteria, Arby's, and the short lived restaurants that sprang up next to the Red Barn. Usually they only seemed to stay open for about six months because they couldn't put a dent in the Red Barn's business. I do remember the first one that opened (and it was about the same time the Red Barn opened there) was called, "Heaping Tee-Pee", and they were kind of like an Arby's, with the roast beef sandwiches.

You are right, though, that Arthur Treacher's has managed to survive, and all the more incredible in an area like Marlow Heights. Outside of Steak in a Sack, I really can't think of any other restaurants that are still open there.

Thanks,

Just a footnote to my original post. Someone from the "DC Grocery" MSN group was recently looking for information on Iverson Mall. She was on a tour/shopping trip from Pennsylvania over the weekend, and one of the stops was Iverson Mall. She wanted to get out for a little while and check out the mall, but said she decided to stay on the bus because there was a fight in progress at the mall's entrance. Isn't that so like Marlow Heights today? :ohwell:
