Huh?

Barack Obama was elected because of the color of his skin. Period. If he was white, he wouldn't have even made US Senator let alone potus. His character is suspect because of his high ratio of arrogance to experience.

I think King's idea is still alive, barely, but, he is rolling over in his grave at the racial nature of this president, his attorney general and their supporters. If they are what he, King, had in mind then I certainly misunderstood what Kind meant.
Larry....I know our politics are different but you can't really believe that Mr. Obama was elected solely because of the color of his skin!

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant? Gee...and although we have never met personally, I have always respected your opinions as they seemed to be well thought out. This smacks of a level of ignorance that I would NEVER expect from you. Peace Bro.

I think Larry's post could be worded differently...

I'd say that a large number of first time voters, and/or people who wouldn't normally vote came out in support of Obama.

Let's think about it though...

Is it his policies that got him elected? Maybe it's his smooth talking abilities that made many, many people buy into his "change"?

What would make tons of people come out in full force for him?

I wouldn't say solely, but I believe that played a large part in it. Surely you are not suggesting he was elected based on his executive experience? He beat Hillary in the primary, and she's easily as liberal as he is - PLUS she'd been a Senator longer, and had at least a nodding acquaintance with the Presidency, not to mention was a partner of Democrat God himself, Willie Jeff Clinton (the REAL first black president).

Seriously, what criteria are you suggesting Obama was elected on, if not his clean, articulate blackness?

And Chris, my focus is on the black and Hispanic victims. So, with that in mind, try once more.

Good point. I forgot the words of Brother Joe Biden. He, the President, is also 'clean' and well spoken.

White guy, same resume, same ability to speak and look nice, do they win their parties nomination let alone the presidency?

Can't we readily agree that if Barack Obama was white, he'd have had no chance?

No argument with the way you state it. I actually was on the fence during his first campaign. I thought he should have waited until he acquired more experience in the Senate but was eventually convinced by the ideas he presented and the thought "if not now, when?"

I will also admit to an enormous amount of pride that a person of color was elected the the highest elected office in the land. For me as a Black man in this country it was a fulfillment of Dr. King's dream and the American Dream that we ALL have an opportunity to become anything we want: even President of the United States.

My emotional response is probably not shared with most on these forums but I would ask that some take the time to walk in my shoes. His election was win for all Americans. We can debate whether his Presidency has been or will be successful but what I can't do is ascribe to the misguided notion that the ONLY reason he is President is because he is Black. That on its face is absurd!

You ask what would make tons of people come out and vote for him? In short, I believe America was ready for a change. Was ready to "step out on faith" and not live in fear. I was then, and remain now, extremely proud of my fellow Americans who chose to look past his color and vote for not a Black Man but a Presidential candidate in whom they could believe and support.

I agree with this 100%. Except for John McCain. It was a loss for him.
And Mitt.

And I can understand that....for his first term.

He has been a complete failure, and has no worries about keeping the path he is on.

The same people who voted for him the first time around bought into his "I need more time" rhetoric. Or they just blame it on Bush.

Funny thing...in 2008 I was recovering from Achilles tendon surgery. We decided to go down to Leonardtown to vote early. We voted and then went to my Doctor's appointment to have my staples removed. Most came out with no problem but the last two were stubborn. It felt like the guy was digging into my leg with a hot poker! After he was done I told my wife that if I had gone through that torture prior to voting...I might have voted for McCain!!!!

Cheers Larry! :buddies:

You're making the point that, while you had reservations about his experience, 'if not now, when?' and that, to me, means "If not a black guy now, when?" Not because you thought him best qualified but, because of the opportunity.

I have ZERO problem with that. People vote for whom they want. None of that changes the fact, that you seem to agree with, that his experience level was weak. I think we're all paying for that. However, George W Bush had all sorts of experience and we are all paying for that as well.

I try, very much, to keep my criticism of the President to policy. Personally, I am happy to have that box checked off "black president'. To me, that means the next time a black man has a chance it WILL be because of his experience, his accomplishments, the content of his character and not, primarilily, in my view, because of the color of his skin.

One of the worst things about Obama, in my view, is that, with his drug history, had he been busted just once it would have ruined his chances at being president. Pure luck that he got away with it. As president, he's done nothing to wipe out the absurdity of so many other young black men having their hopes, their opportunities narrowed as young men or boys for doing the exact same stuff he did.

THAT, to me, speaks to a lack of character in the man, to live that.

Unless you're a woman, of course. Then the man will always win and the chick can suck it. Even if she is better qualified for the job.

A "complete failure?" I disagree. No President can or will ever please everyone.
To expect so is incredibly naive. I think the country is in much better shape than it was four years ago. Could things be better? Sure but you could say that during any point in our history. This President has accomplished much in an extremely challenging environment and has been reelected.

Sorry he hasn't lived up to your expectations but there has been been only one perfect man...and look what they did to Him! Good luck in the future.

Obama has achieved great things, things he set out to do. What Chris is saying is that they haven't worked for the better interest of the nation as a whole.

Obama care is not lowering health care costs. So, that has failed, yes? Of course, we are told 'just wait until it's all implemented in 2014!' to which I say, sarcastically, can't wait. Government does NOTHING cheaper and more efficicently than private interest. It can't, it's not supposed to.

The Stimulus took care of his supporters, teachers, public sector workers, as intended. It has not lead to economic recovery as promised.

To me, George Bush set the nation off on a course that has found us lost and adrift. Obama was, as you mentioned, at least partially, elected based on the hope of a new, better course. To me, Obama has continued the Bush legacy. And mess.

Then there is that. First black president or first woman? I can't wait until we get a gay guy against a woman. No holds barred!

Just a few headlines we wouldn't have seen without his presidency...

"Obamacare"

"Fast and Furious"

"Benghazi"

"War on coal"

"Solyndra"

"Flexibility"

"Moratorium on drilling in the gulf"

"You didn't build that"

"Assault Weapons Ban"

"Sandra Fluke"

"Shovel Ready"

"Buffet Rule"

A few stats...

2.1 Million Americans NOT in the workforce
A gallon of gas is up 79%
Federal Debt is up 55%
Food Stamp recipients up 46%
Americans in poverty up 23%
Insurance Premiums up 17%

I don't expect one man to be able to change the country basically overnight, but I expect the American people to see the direction this country is headed.

Is it ALL Obama's fault? No.
Is it ALL the Democrat's fault? No.
Is it ALL the Republican's fault? No.

I firmly believe that the two party system is entirely too bought out, lobbied, and barely anyone on either side wants to truely help American become the great nation it once was.

Thank for the "Good luck". Hopefully I'll see a Libertarian in office one day.

I think you are laying way to much at his feet. Most of that is readily foreseable with any D potus and most R's. Dontcha think?
