I'm about to just give up on Maryland crabs. Do crabbers just sell the larger crabs to restaurants in New York City or something? Where can I buy some decent crabs, preferably Calvert County -- restaurant or carry out.
The prices are ridiculous... the quality stinks... and I mean stink because they are cooking and selling dead crabs. I don't like buying steamed crabs because so many places cook dead crabs and sell them -- it's obvious when I open the crab and it smells like a bottle of Mr. Clean Ammonia floor cleaner.
Used to buy live crabs at Chesapeake Bounty in St. Leonard but their prices are so much higher than the used to be a few years ago. $48 a dozen for Jumbos? I know that's the going price everywhere but who's that rich? All they had last weekend was #2 males that barely had any meat. What people call the larger #1 males, we used to throw back in the water.
Is it possible to successfully catch my own crabs anywhere without a boat?
