I know the law of when a child no longer needs a booster seat, but does Maryland have a law concerning what age a child on longer needs a car seat?

I think as long as the child meets the minimun requirements for the booster seat they can be switched to one. There should be a weight recommendation somewhere on it.

JMO but I am all for keeping the 5 pt. harness (usually meaning car seat) as long as possible.

Generally, look at the height/weight limits on the infant carrier and car seats. They can help guide you. My children have been in carriers until they were 20-22 pounds AND 1 year old. BUT, if they were longer than the carrier reccomendation, we moved them to a convertible carseat. The next step is the car seat, which is 20-22 pounds on up. I generally keep the kids in the car seats until about age 4. Then, I moved to a high back booster. According to a MD State Trooper, the key is to keep the seat belt off their neck. If you look at the link below, you'll see how it should appear. My best suggestion is to keep the child in the carrier or rear facing convertible car seat for as long as possible. Then, move to the car seat or turn the convertible one forward facing once they've reached the proper poundage/age/length. I hope it helps....every car seat is different so use the directions as a guide....

You can do further googling on the subject, too.

The toddler usually sits in a five point harness style car seat, but today the van was out and all we had around here was a booster seat. I needed to get five minutes down the road, so I was trying to figure out if I could legally go out on the road with that booster seat. It was classified as 30-60 pounds. He is 40 pounds. The height is the most important thing. The seat belt seemed to fit him well.

Yeah, but your kids are in their 20s now....time to let them get out of the booster seats.
