The Automotive Safety Enforcement Division (ASED) of the Maryland State Police has been working on automating the Maryland Safety Inspection System for approximately a year and a half. This system will once completed allow for the electronic inspection of used vehicles in Maryland. Once the inspection is completed electronically the information is immediately sent to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). This eliminates the need for any paper copies of the inspection to be submitted to MVA upon registration of the vehicle.
As of May 2, 2016 we have 994 out of the 1588 Authorized Maryland Safety Inspection Stations using this system. This system is voluntary at this time, however all the stations that have chosen to utilize it have all had positive feedback on the system. Any Inspection Station that is interested in enrolling in this program should contact their assigned Maryland State Police representative for the Inspection Station, or call 410-768-3788. A couple of the advantages of using this system is that the inspection station will no longer need to keep paper copies of the inspection reports. All information is kept online and can be retrieved at any time it is needed. The inspection station will not need to worry about securing unused paper certificates, in this system the inspection information is forwarded directly to MVA, therefore no paper certificates are required. The station will use less time/manpower filing paper and will not have to worry about certificates being stolen.
