(College Park, MD) Today, the Maryland State Police and the State Highway Administration honored Trooper First Class Anthony (Tony) Jones 15th year anniversary of his tragic death on US-Route 50. On May 9, 2004, Trooper First Class Jones was struck and killed by a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver. Trooper Jones was on the scene of a single vehicle collision on the shoulder of eastbound Route-50 near Church Road, Bowie, Prince George’s County, Maryland. Trooper Jones was removing a tire from the travel portion of the highway when he was struck by a vehicle and dragged several hundred yards. The at fault driver stopped near the scene and was later taken into custody after exhibiting signs of being intoxicated.

Trooper First Class Jones was a retired United States Air Force veteran and had served with the Maryland State Police for six years as a second career. He was survived by his wife and two children.

In memory of Trooper Jones, a traffic initiative was organized and enforcement action was concentrated on Route-50 today. Troopers from all over the State assisted with the operation making 53 traffic stops, writing 42 citations, 31 warnings and made 2 criminal arrests.

The Maryland State Police strongly urge everyone to be responsible and not drive while impaired by alcohol, drugs or any other chemical that reduces your ability to drive a vehicle safely. Troopers Jones’ collision absolutely could have been avoided if the at fault driver was not under the influence. Please also be aware if you are with someone that you have knowledge of committing a crime (like driving while impaired) and do nothing, you may be charged as well. Please do not drive while impaired and do not allow others to drive while impaired. Our family’s lives depend on it.
