(FREDERICK, MD) — Maryland State Police are investigating two separate suspected impaired driving crashes that occurred in the same area in less than three hours last night, one of which claimed the life of a 54 year old man from Kentucky.
Maryland state troopers from the Frederick Barrack were dispatched to the report of a crash involving a motorcycle and a Jeep Renegade on northbound I-270 near the 28 mile marker at 8:30 p.m. last night. Several witnesses observed a black Jeep strike the motorcycle and flee the scene.

The driver of the Jeep is identified as Brandon Alas Roque, 23, of Brunswick, Maryland. As a result of the crash, Roque’s Jeep became disabled. Troopers located him a few miles from the scene at a gas station on Route 85, Buckeystown Pike. Roque was taken into police custody for the investigation. Troopers are investigating whether alcohol, speed and/or distraction were contributing factors in this crash. Charges are pending consultation with the Frederick County State’s Attorney.
Shortly after 11:00 p.m., as troopers and personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation/CHART were clearing the area from the motorcycle crash, a 2002 Cadillac Escalade traveled down the embankment to the right of the lane closures. Troopers observed the Cadillac Escalade strike five vehicles that were traveling on the shoulder. The Cadillac then hit the guardrail before overturning onto the right shoulder where the vehicle came to rest. One of the vehicles struck by the Cadillac was propelled into the lane closure where troopers and Chart personnel were investigating the motorcycle crash.
State police and EMS providers immediately rushed to the overturned Cadillac to render aid. The passenger identified as Alexander Alfaro Amaya, 21, of Gaithersburg, was transported by ambulance to Frederick Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. No other injuries were reported on the scene.
The driver of the Cadillac Escalade is identified as Steven Alfaro Amaya, 20, of Gaithersburg. Amaya was uninjured and refused medical treatment at the scene. Troopers on the scene detected signs of impairment. Amaya was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence and transported to the Frederick Barrack for processing.
