Shortly after 12 p.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack responded to Woodsboro Pike (Route 194) at W. Frederick Street in Walkersville, Maryland for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. According to a preliminary investigation, the pedestrian, identified as Nikole Cynthia Morfessis, 15, of Walkersville, Maryland, was standing on the edge of the roadway on the northbound side, looking northbound. A tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on Route 194 when the Morfessis walked out in the roadway into the side of the trailer portion of the truck.
Morfessis was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where she was declared deceased. The driver remained at the scene. Speeding and impaired driving were not factors in this crash. Route 194 was shut down at the scene following the crash.
