(FREDERICK, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash in which one person died and another was injured Tuesday morning in Frederick County.

At about 7:40 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack responded to the area of the 8500 block of Old National Pike in Frederick, Maryland, for a report of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries. According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a 2019 Nissan Sentra, identified as William Harold Westmoreland, 19, of Frederick, Maryland, was traveling eastbound on Old National Pike and proceeded to pass multiple vehicles on the right shoulder of the roadway.

The Nissan then crashed into a snowbank and was forced across the double yellow line into the westbound lanes, crashing head-on into a 2005 Ford F150 pickup truck. Westmoreland was entrapped in his car and needed to be extricated by firefighters and EMS crews. He was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford, a 53-year-old male, was transported by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland, for treatment of his injuries.

Old National Pike was shut down for about 2 ½ hours as a result of the crash. A detour was set up at Linganore Road and the Park and Ride during the closure.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation…
