Shortly before 9:20 p.m. on Friday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack responded to the area of U.S. Route 40 and Harmony Road in Frederick, Maryland for a two-vehicle crash. According to a preliminary investigation, a Toyota Prius, driven by Donald Frederick Reineke, 89, of Frederick, Maryland, was traveling north on Harmony Road and attempted to cross U.S. Route 40.
At the same time, a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck, driven by John Michael Hartman Jr., 40, of Frederick, Maryland, was traveling east on U.S. Route 40 through the intersection on Harmony Road. The Chevrolet and Toyota crashed into each other at the intersection. Reineke was declared deceased at the scene. Hartman was transported by Maryland State Police helicopter to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment of his injuries.
The road was closed for about three hours following the crash. The Maryland State Police Crash Team will be conducting the investigations into this case.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
