(ELKRIDGE, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash in which three people died Thursday afternoon in Howard County.

Shortly before 3:25 p.m. on Thursday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Waterloo Barrack and the Howard County Police Department responded to a 911 call for a single-vehicle crash in the center median on Interstate 95 North, south of Maryland Route 100 in Elkridge, Maryland. According to a preliminary investigation, a 2005 Mazda 3 began driving aggressively before it overturned in the center median adjacent to the left lane of I-95 North. The vehicle struck multiple trees before coming to a rest.

The driver, Robert William Nagel, 44, and the two passengers, Michael Louis Labonte Jr, 33, and Eric Severin, 43, all of Laurel, Maryland, were declared deceased at the scene by Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services personnel. The victims were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsies. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The left two lanes of I-95 North were closed for several hours after the crash. The Maryland State Police Crash Team also responded to the scene to assume the investigation.

According to a preliminary investigation, speed appears to have been a factor in the crash. However, the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
