State Police Maryland State Police Locate Missing Kentucky Man In Fatal Allegany County Crash

(CUMBERLAND, Md.) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that was reported this morning in Allegany County.

Shortly after 7:50 a.m., the Maryland State Police Cumberland Barrack was notified that a Chevrolet Tahoe was located down an embankment on eastbound Interstate 68 prior to Mountain Road in Cumberland, Maryland. A witness told troopers that the vehicle was about 50 yards off the road.

The driver of the vehicle, Avery Smothers, 31, of Lexington, Kentucky, was located at crash site. He was declared deceased at the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation, Smothers possibly had been ejected from the vehicle, which traveled off the roadway struck a tree and rolled numerous times. The vehicle was not visible from the road.

Smothers was reported missing on March 3, 2019. Family members told investigators that Smothers left Kentucky on Feb. 26 and was driving to visit relatives in Maryland at the time of his disappearance.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
