MILLERSVILLE, MD — Today, Dr. Charles Glass was unanimously confirmed by the Maryland State Senate as the Director of Maryland Environmental Service (MES). He was appointed as Acting Director by Governor Larry Hogan in June 2020.
"In the time I have had the privilege of working as Secretary of the MES Board of Directors under Dr. Glass, I have admired his many talents as a scientist, a manager, and a public servant," said District Judge and MES Board Secretary, Frederic N. Smalkin. "But most of all, I have admired how he cares for the folks at MES who work so hard every day to keep the environment of this State healthy. I am proud to work with such a fine man as Dr. Glass, and I congratulate him upon his confirmation as Director."
Prior to taking on his leadership role with MES, Dr. Glass served as Deputy Secretary at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Before joining DNR, Dr. Glass served as Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy Analysis and Planning and Director of Bicycle and Pedestrian Access at the Maryland Department of Transportation. He has 20 years of experience in academia and the engineering consulting industry, including serving as an associate professor in civil engineering at Howard University for seventeen years. Dr. Glass received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at Johns Hopkins University and he completed his Master of Science and Ph.D. at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
"I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead this incredible organization," said Dr. Glass. "I would like to thank Governor Hogan for his confidence in nominating me for this role, as well as all the members of the Maryland State Senate for a unanimous confirmation vote."
