Maryland Taxes and Fees

I think we need a small business sub-forum for small business owners to vent. But until then, I will post here...

I despise the month of April. As a small business owner who does not farm any financial stuff out - ie payroll, tax forms, tax filings etc - April seems to be the worst month. On top of personal income tax returns due, we also have Personal Property tax returns to fill out, end of quarter employment forms, sales tax, unemployment tax and forms, etc.

But the one that happens to irk me today is the Traders License renewal. Nothing new here but as I was writing my check for $300 for my business license, I notice a $2 "ISSUING FEE"! WTF!! The state requires us to have this license and the license amount is based on our inventory, but then to add a separate fee to issue required license to us is beyond ridiculous!! What am I missing here? Is this just another example of the money grabbing politicians in this state who want to tax and fee us to extinction?

Sorry TPD....my horror story comes from my homestate of NY where I just learned that if I take my farmland out of active agricultural designation...I get a hefty boost in taxes. (Ok,...I sort of understand) BUT...now I found out that if I were to change the status to "residential" I would have to pay the county back for 8 years of back taxes. If I were to sell it to a home owner, and they want to build...THEY would get smacked with 8 years of residential tax...since 2012. Sure NY...why not start digging up the dead and pull fillings from the teeth while you're at it. This is SOO wrong.

I bought property in Northern NY 10 years ago so when I retired I could build a summer place so the wife and I could spend more time where we grew up and with the kiddos and grandies and get out of the hot humid summers. We have decided our best solution is our camper because if we put a house (650 sq/ft cabin with no insulation and only a Monitor for heat) our taxes would be more than my current real estate taxes in VA on a 3 bedroom, large lot, residential home. Also given the governors love of taxing the rural counties for money to support his beloved NYC and other liberal voter bases, hatred of guns and 2nd A rights, and corruption in the state we have decided to dump the plan. NY is the CA of the east and is spiraling into bankruptcy. When this happens, the Trump hating leadership will claim the Federal Government needs to bail them out. cuomo, shumer, ocasio-cortes, kirsten gillibrand are the killers of NY.

What are you missing?

If you are bitching about a $2 fee, you probably shouldn't be in business.

If you have time to do your own payroll, tax returns, etc, you probably aren't running much of a business.

There are a lot of good reasons why so many of us are leaving the state when we retire..most of them financial reasons.

We are retired. We stayed because of family, which is wonderful. You are right that staying is a financial burden. Fam talks about leaving. If they leave, we will, too. Be careful in Korea. :)

Also, I didn’t want to experience separation from fam again. I was dragged kicking and screaming from Louisiana to MD in 1984 by, now, divorced hub. I only saw my parents and bros twice a year. I will not allow that to happen again. My parents have since died. All, but one bro live north of the Mason/Dixon, now. The one left in the South has built a sustainable compound in middle TX. So, might be going there if push comes to shove.

Here's another good one:

If you work in Maryland (or for a Maryland corporation) and live in another state, MD still taxes the chit out of you.

If you are a nonresident who works in Maryland and/or derives other income from a Maryland source, you are subject to Maryland's income tax rates as well as the special nonresident tax rate of 1.75%.

Interesting, and so is this...

I would say $2 makes it worse, not better. If I am paying you a FEE, you shouldn't charge me a FEE for the priviledge.

Lets give an example you can better realte to. Would you be okay with jails charging a fee to issue bail bonds? You pay the bail amount, but you also need to pay an additional fee for, uh, processing.

I will propose the MVA implement a $2 issuing fee for every driver’s license in addition to the license renewal fee you already pay for the great service you receive.
