Chief Illiniwek Mascot to Do Final Dance at University of Illinois Game Tonight

Removing the chief frees the university of NCAA sanctions after the organization deemed Illiniwek — portrayed by buckskin-clad students who dance at home football and basketball games and other athletic events — an offensive use of American Indian imagery and barred the school from hosting postseason athletic events.

What a crock of :cussing:

I think that images of Custer's Last stand should be deemed offensive to the white man. Lets go ahead and change the names of all the teams that have offensive names while we are at it, No cowboys, redskins, cheifs, hell some grizzlie's may think the term bears is offensive, braves, indians, pirates. Change the name to some PC friendly name that strips the teams of any edge that there names have.

"In NFL games today we have the KC scalping slightly tan native americans against the Dallas oppresive pale faces"

Watch it
LOL! Don't get me started. I'm a Seminoles (FSU) fan and when this topic came up with them, the Seminole tribe said it was not offensive because the teams use their name as a symbol of strength.

It's all pretty annoying. Yet another example of PC going too far...in my opinion.

Pete

Repete
this is about the most stupid thing I have ever seen. If the U of I changed it from the "Fighting Illini" to "Drunken Blackjack Dealers" would they be happier?

I graduated from FSU in 2003 and there was always someone complaining about that or trying to make a point about getting it changed. I was glad to hear they made the decision to keep the mascot. Some people always take things to the extreme,

You're failing to mention that the most of offensive of ALL sports names in the U.S. is the Redskins. I've had a couple of Native American friends tell me that to call someone of their ancestry a "redskin" is the equivalent of calling a black person the "N" word. There was talk of this topic on ESPN radio yesterday. Like it or not, we live in a different world now. We have to be sensitive to all people in our society and respect their concerns. For the most part, I have heard or read very little by way of complaints about the majority of Native American mascots/team names. I know the Cleveland Indians have caught some flack over their logo (the laughing Indian that is brutally stereotypical) and the Redskins were supposed to change their official team name to the "Skins" years ago (which of course never happened). I think the best way for those offended is to protest with their wallets. If you don't like what you see/hear, then don't support it. Personally, I'm offended by television, radio and cinema's depicition of Southerners in general and white Southern men in particular. White southern men is pretty much the last group you can openly mock and ridicule in mainstream media without any backlash. That being said, I'm not going to whine to CNN, Congress or picket on the streets because of it.
