Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20 Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong
answers.)

How hard is it to work at a fast food place. The registers have pictures, all you do is touch the key, it tells you how much change to give, ect. I was 16 when I worked at Mickey D's. We had to write down everything you ordered, then ring it up by price of item one at a time. Nothing but our brain told us how much change you got. I had to learn to make proper change. Kids today are stupid and lazy.

Had the same thing at BJ's over the weekend it was $21.08 I handed him 25 and while I was diggin out the 8 cents he hit in 25 on the "computer" so I gave him the 8 cents and he looked at me and says "I all ready put it in". I knew there was no hope so I just took my $3.98 and left.

I saw this one day!

A few years ago, I was in the Hollywood Burchmart. Two young girls behind the counter. One was counting her register out, the other waiting on me. The one girl says to the other.." Whats two times ten"...she gives her this blank stare look and grabs a calculater. Then looks at the other girl and say's oh it's 20.
No chit...I thought for just one minute they were effing with me...I walked out of the store with this sad grin on my face!

You either got shorted 2 cents, $25.08 - 21.08 = $4.00 or you got 6 cents too much, $25.00 - 21.08 = 3.92 or maybe math isn't your best subject either. :lmao:
