Matthew 26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the(b) covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Was Judas there the whole time? One of the commentaries says this about Judas.

Was Judas present for the first celebration of the Lord's Supper? The debate centers on the manuscript of John 13:2. Some textual traditions say, And supper being ended, which would imply that Jesus washed their feet and that Judas left after the institution of the Lord's Supper. Other textual traditions read, And during supper at John 13:2. This would indicate that Jesus washed feet and Judas left sometime during the meal, and therefore may have left before the institution of the Lord's Supper.

Since John did not describe the institution of the Lord's Supper in his gospel account, there is debate as to if Judas was present when the Lord's Supper was first given, as described in the following passage. Most confidently believe Judas was not part of this part of the Lord's Supper . The issue is very difficult to determine with certainty.

I'm not going to get into the transubstantiation/consubstantiation debate that so many want to bring up when anything is said about the last supper. I'll leave that for those who are more studied in church doctrines.

Let me ask this question though. If this event started at sundown at the beginning of the Passover observance, before the lambs were sacrificed in the Temple, leaving them without the sacrificed animal.. wouldn't that affect how we look at these translations?

Not to trivialize the subject, but only to give a simple example..... when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, they are remembering how the pilgrims would have died had the Natives not shared their experience and abundance with them. I was taught in grammar school that we have turkey at Thanksgiving because the Natives showed the pilgrims how.

I've been through times when I couldn't afford a Thanksgiving turkey. Once I could only get turkey hot dogs, and with Christmas right around the corner... that meal changed my holiday plans for years. My children asked me why we didn't have a turkey like everyone else. I didn't have an answer....

So, is it possible that when Jesus broke the bread and offered up the last cup of wine... was He teaching us the significance of the timing of the last supper as well?

After all.... by the time the lambs were sacrificed at the Temple according to the law, Jesus would be very busy.

Jesus knew what was going to happen.
