Matthew 24:1 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
When we left Matthew 23, Jesus was crying about Jerusalem. Now we see that He had left the Temple and was walking away. According to the commentaries, He was walking away as if He would never see the Temple again.
The Temple was a beautiful place. It had huge blocks of stone that were covered with plates of pure gold. When the sun hit the building it shone. Where there wasn't gold, there were blocks of pure white marble that shone as well. It was a spectacular building. That's why the disciples tried to get Jesus to look at the Temple. They knew how special it was to Him. It was after all His Father's house.
Better than Daniel, Jesus knew the future. Just like the prophets before Him, He had tried to get all of Jerusalem to repent and save the city. He had tried to save the Temple. Now looking back on it, knowing its demise, He was brought to tears.
Back in the Book of Daniel, when Daniel was captured and castrated, the Temple was gutted and destroyed by the Babylonians. The Temple that was built in it's place was rebuilt by Herod the Great. Construction began the year Jesus was born. They kept building and adding to it for 63 years. The Temple was finished until well after the crucifixion. Jesus knew it was magnificent, and would even increase.
After the crucifixion, the Jews would revolt against the Romans, according to the commentaries. Then in 70 AD, as Jesus said in these verses, there was a siege and the Jews were hiding in the temple, the last stronghold in the city. So the Romans burned it down. After the siege, the Romans went in to salvage all the gold. Every stone was picked up, stripped of its gold, and thrown aside..... Just as Jesus said here.
Daniel saw the future. Jesus knew the future.
