Matthew 24:3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
They're in the last week before the crucifixion. Jesus has been crying over the fate of Jerusalem.
They thought it would make Jesus feel better to look back over the Temple gleaming in the sunlight. Instead Jesus just told them the Temple would be totally destroyed. To the disciples, anything that would bring about the end of the Temple would mean the end of the age. It would be so devastating that it would truly be the end of time. They didn't know what Daniel had seen and what Jesus knew.
I guess they wanted specifics. If Jesus gave them specifics, though, then Satan would know the specifics as well. Satan could put off attacking people, and people would be lulled into a sense of complacency and never make a decision for Christ. The plan for the future requires everyone to be on guard, including the enemy.
