Matthew 26:7 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
The easy english commentary puts it this way.
The Jewish government was called the ‘Sanhedrin’. That was the chief Jewish court and it had the power to deal with religious matters. But the court broke many of the rules when they made their judgement that night. They were meeting in the high priest’s house, but they should have been meeting in a special hall in the Temple. It was night and an official trial should not have happened at night.
Peter had the courage to follow. He wanted to know what would happen to Jesus. Peter did not realise that he was in a dangerous place. It would be very hard for him to admit that he was one of Jesus’ disciples.
